precicely, all the movies left that I have seen are fine, fine films. And I don't think its fair to terminate a film I have not seen - although as a general point this may explain why the earlier years are doing so well comparitively.

the time has now come for me to remove the lost weekend. that movie just bothers the hell out of me. yeahyeahyeah, i *know* it's sposed to be a horrifically-realistic, bleak portrayal of alcoholism and its potentially devastating effects.. but i thought it was over-done and contrived. i bet i'm the only one who felt that way. besides, who wants to watch the damn thing more than once??

this will be heretical, i am sure, but i thought leaving las vegas was a better movie.

ok, as replacement... it's between spellbound and mildred pierce if we're talking about other nominees. i love hitchcock as much as the next bird-brained girl, but i really do love mildred pierce, too. i guess i'll leave it a draw.

more lack of closure in my life.

so, I know who never sees bats when they drink too much!
the movie does give the practicing alcholic many practical ideas about where to leave bottles around the house!

dear rest-of-board,

surely ye can continue to strip these fine films. it *is* just an exercise, after all. it is no fun when i must resort to playing with myself.

..ye know what i mean.

remember: participation is ten/twelfths of the law.

I went to some of the previous pages to see what movies you pulled.

I got all ready to take a few off but decided, while maybe weak as movies, that they had dynamite performances in them. so, I was gonna take another one but I like it better than this one so this is the one I took.

'The Unforgiven'
yeah, I like it. i maybe even agree that it belongs in the national film registry but why boot 'French Connection' if I like it better? it's my call so there you go.
Clint and Hackman are good and I like the point of the movie. still, I think for all Clint's strengths he is a too frugal producer. I think many sets and supporting cast members have a bargain basement quality that keeps the dramatic head of steam from building up as well as it might have.

a very good western, I don't think it's one of the great westerns. maybe one of Clint's best acting roles but only because it takes him the whole movie to turn into the Clint Eastwood we already know.

I liked a lot of movies that year. The player, the crying game, howard's end, glengarry glen ross, malcom x... I think I can honestly say I like them all better than 'the unforgiven' and I like nearly as many every bit as well. it's weird to think how much I still went to the movies in those days.

all the king's men falleth by the wayside. yes, it's a great film (as are the rest on the list), and yes, i loved the book, but it's one of those movies i don't really enjoy watching anymore. i don't know why. maybe i'm sick of the whole thinly-veiled, huey longly corruption in louisiana politics. not fair to blame the movie, of course, but it's going anyway.

i love both the heiress and twelve o'clock high much better.

So that's it for West Side Story. Certainly a very grand Hollywood musical, but not as good as plenty that aren't here. There's so many other great movies from that year- The Hustler, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Yojimbo, The Children's Hour- that I'll take any of them.

Oh, and I've condensed the list.

The Bridge on the River Kwai is out. I watched this a few days ago, its very good and it always surprises me that William Holden dies at the end. But its nowhere near Lawrence of Arabia which is brilliant

i love all of the above. however, the one i love the least (that sounds funny, i know) would hafta be you can't take it with you. it's great, but it doesn't have that punch of masterpipece power. um, to me.

give me pygmalion, a hundred times over, instead. sniff.

i guess everyone has given up on this. tis a shame, because i haven't. we must see this through to the end, i say and i mean. if ye won't play with me, i will resort to playing with myself. surely ye don't want to let me, kath, of dubious taste, decide which picture wins the whole shebang?

fine, then. here i go.

out goeth an american in paris. sure, it's great, very artistic and striking, gene kelly is wonderful, but it doesn't really belong in the, oh, say, ten best movies of all time. plot-wise, it fairly sucketh.

and there are sooo many good replacements, i just don't know what to do. of the other nominees, streetcar named desire is worthy... but off-list, we have some of my all-time fave flicks: african queen, the day the earth stood still, and strangers on a train.

movies so vastly different, but all excellent. ack.

i am going to be rather unorthodox and pick the day the earth stood still. a ground-breaking classic of its type. (but i worship african and strangers still, i do. forgive me, humphrey and alfred.)

Out goes Cuckoos nest, mainly because of its untouchable reputation. I have seen it a couple times and enjoyed but have no desire to watch it ever again.

Cavalcade is gone. Maybe I should admit that I haven't seen it (who has?), but it's reputation as a pseudo-highbrow bit of nothing precedes it, and can it really possibly be better than either Duck Soup or I Am a Fugitive From a Chain Gang?

it's actually not too shabby in that company. they say Bunuel was very fond of it and it's easy to see why. it's sort of fatalistic for what passed for high brow entertainment in them days. I wasn't about to take it myself but I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did against well known, very good films.

thems the breaks.

I nearly took 'Schindler's List'. be honest with me. if i'd taken it would you have called me an anti-semite? I hope not but i decided not to risk it.

i've taken out 'the french connection'. it's the best cop show of the 70's but it's still a cop show (pretty much)

what would i take instead? holy jiminy fuck-all, what wouldn't I take?

maybe I wouldn't take 'Nichols and Alexandria' but even that was pretty damned good!

Ahh, The Apartment has lost its lease. A good film, to be sure, but pretty overrated, especially in the company that remains. Lemon, as he was prone to, just gets a bit too hammy in this movie, and all told it's kind of slight and bloated at the same time. 1960, however, was no great shakes for the movies. The Apartment was probably the best film nominated that year, but I'd place Psycho and even Inherit the Wind (the one Stanley Kramer hit-you-over-the-head message movie I really like) over it. There remain four movies that I couldn't possibly vote off now.
