Yeah, awards are dumb blah blah blah. It's very nice though when a great piece of work is acknowledged for posterity in such a way though, as rare as such an occurrence may be. The nominations are tomorrow morning and here, for the heck of it, are my predictions for the main nominations.

Although Eastwood is a two time winner and Nicholson three times. Not that should necessarily count against them, although I think it might.
Odd that the Academy can go the symapthy route at times (Wayne for one), but still can't bring themselves to honour Scorsese. Maybe this finally is his year. Is there a chance DiCaprio might get in the supporting role category (in which case I think he'll win) Whittaker and Mirren look like shoo-ins but you never can tell.
Isn't Dreamgirls front runner for best picture ?

I'm looking forward to watching this, hopefully tomorrow. She is a damn fine actress and it's nice to see her starting to get some challenging roles. She was also good in World Trade Center and The Great New Wonderful.

I'm reminded of the Onion piece Martin Scorsese's next film to consist of Three Hours of begging for Oscar. There's every chance, he'll get the win this year, but frankly there's more deserving ones if you're going by film, rather than sympathy for being ignored for so long- Alejandro Innaritu and Stephen Frears's work for their respective films in particular. Actually, if this was to be the 'genuine' list of nominations, I wouldn't be too disappointed- a fairly eclectic list of what's in the mainstream, with no bad films (other than Dreamgirls, of course). Stephen Frears is one of the good guys in UK cinema, so I reckon it'd be great if he got the nomination.
As for Cohen, immense and committed as performance for Borat was, you've got to remember that the Academy has spent its history largely "looking down" at comedies- very few actors have got their nominations for comic performances, much less won it.

It's before my time but I've been told, he never came back from Karangahape Road.
Dreamgirls (2.75) and The Departed (3.00) are the frontrunners, according to William Hill. Then Little Miss Sunshine and Babel (6.00). Letters From Iwo Jima follows (11.00) and The Queen is last (13.00), but i wouldn't be surprised if it won the Oscar.
Scorsese is the CLEAR favourite to win for best director. Only 1.33! Inarritu and Eastwood are second with 8.00!
Forest Whitaker is also a clear favourite (1.25). O'Toole follows with 7.00 and Di Caprio with 9.00. William Hill also included Will Smith, SB Cohen and Gosling in their odds.
Helen Mirren is dead certain to win in her category it seems (1.08). There's no chance in hell she's gonna lose, especially considering the limp competition this year. No way Streep (11.00) is gonna win for Devil Wears Prada and i don't see Dench, Winslet or Cruz winning either, even though Cruz was supposed to be really good in Volver.

I hadn't seen these odds, but it just goes to show how easy it is to predict some of this stuff. I thought Gyllenhaal might replace perennial nominee Kate Winslet because she's been building up recognition and accolades pretty steadily, but I don't doubt either actress is worthy of a nomination though I haven't seen either movie.

The Screen Actors Guild nominated him for both categories (supporting for The Departed, which is ludicrous considering his and Damon's are incontravertibly co-lead roles), and that group I believe is more or less the same people who will be doing the nomination of actors, so it could happen. He's been deserving of an Academy award several times already.

Re: Academy Award Nominations
Well, I was wrong where I varied from the Screen Actors Guild (really off with Supporting Actor), but delighted to find I was wrong about a certain Best Picture nominee.
Actual nominations are in bold below:

Hmmm.... He was good in what was essentially a one-note performance. No character development, no arc, etc. No better than Alec Baldwin, really.
Oh well, I'm glad Marty's films are still being considered.
Alan Arkin's character, while the only decent thing in that over-rated film, was funny - but it was pretty one note as well.
I saw Little Children (which was very good) so I'm presuming the character who embarks on an affair with Kate Winslet is the guy who's been nominated.
Still, Eddie Murphy will probably win.
I know a few of you think Hidden (Cache) is rubbish - I happen to think it was the best film of 2006 but I believe it is illegible for Oscar nomination because of some daft rule that the director and producer (or writer, or something) have to be from the same country. Hidden is a French language film, directed by an Austrian, financed by someone else...

Sorry to be misleading, Billybob, but that list was just my prediction of what the nominees would be.
Ah! Now you tell me. Oh well, I was going to be completely wrong with my predictions anyway.
