"The Godfather" tops these listen so often, it has almost become a cliché. Coppola's 1972 epic tragedy of twisted loyalty and moral decay is without a doubt the film most likely to top the lists a hundred years from now, it has become so deeply embedded in our psyche. But there are other classics, lest we forget. William Wellman's "The Public Enemy" from 1931 was the film that made James Cagney a star and established the basic narrative format of the popular genre. It was a sensation at the time and remains a classic today. 84 minutes of taut action and storytelling, a welcome antidote to the three-hour plus epics that were popularized by Coppola.
