THE DUKE AND HIS SPECIAL GAIT:
Ever noticed how John Wayne, in the later westerns, has that characteristic swagger? He's tall and burly, very heavy-set, and when he walks he tends to lean his body to one side, giving him a lop-sided gait. It's one of his trademarks, along with the exclamation, "That'll be the day!" How do you feel about the way he walks? Does it add character? Authority? He is a man of action, and the lop-sided gait contrasts nicely with his determination and power, in a slovenly way. We are going to take out all the bad guys, but we'll do it at our own leisurely pace. You know trouble is brewing, and there is the Duke, a man of action, a man with a sense of purpose, our only hope, and he can't walk straight. Makes high drama into human drama, our hero flawed, the outcome uncertain. Duke ups the tension by casually dragging his feet in his confident waddle down Main Street. Soon there will be a showdown and Dino is drunk again.

Re: John Wayne and the way he walks
Famous story about JW (far from macho real name Marian Morrison) and walking concerns his disastrous attempt at directing the Alamo.
Having fought hard to get Laurence Harvey cast, JW was pissed off to learn that not only was the English actor bisexual, he was also prone to bouts of being very effeminate and - worse still - had developed quite a crush on JW.
Tiring of how his co-star used to follow him around the set cooing "Just one night, Dukie!", JW eventually snapped when LH was mock-mincing his way across a balustrade.
"Can't you at least walk like a man, Laurence?", JW snapped.
"Are you talking to me, Marian" replied Harvey.

I never saw the sex appeal of John Wayne.
LH is another story, Bi or not, he had appeal ... or at least for me.
