The trailer to "Joker"

Looks like another tour-de-force by Joaquin Phoenix -

... very promising, I'd say!

So Batman isn't gonna be in this story?

Dunno

Does he have to be in it, if the story's how the Joker became the Joker, nemesis and all?

If it's just an origin story then I guess not.

This after Jared Leto's defining turn at the role in 'Suicide Squad'? :)

I like Phoenix, but this looks very overwrought personally. There's a strange mix here between the realism the film seems to aim for and the big daft comic book melodrama the trailer seems to portray, with the former shedding light on just how forceful and artficial the latter seems in such a context. This, along the fact that it's a Todd Phillips film and I have yet to see anything from him I remotely enjoyed. Hope it proves me wrong of course, but I'm not holding my breath.

So Joker is just like Batman, being galvanized by an incident or two at the hands of a couple thugs. The parts where he's a regular person seem interesting. I wonder if it can make the jump from relating to that, to getting why someone would start to become a serial killer/criminal.
