Ringo Lam RIP
Just learnt of Ringo Lam’s death this past December 29 at the age of 63. He was part of Hong Kong's New Wave of filmmakers, who in the period between the 1984 Joint Declaration (in which Britain agreed to cede Hong Kong back to Mainland China after a hundred or so years of laissez-faire colonial rule) and the 1997 Handover (when the colony officially became a part of the People’s Republic, the meaning of which is still in flux and will continue to be for some time), made some of the most vital films the world had ever seen. Ringo Lam's most famous film, "City on Fire", inspired what was basically a remake in Quentin Tarantino's "Reservoir Dogs", but Ringo Lam was in a whole other league, a true original. RIP Ringo Lam
