The Blackpool Dalek

Postby GoogaMooga » 16 Oct 2018, 18:25

The Blackpool Dalek is back, after 50 years! Yes, it's been dusted off and is now part of a display of vintage amusements at The Ice Cream Shop / amusement arcade in Blackpool's Waterloo Road. In the mid-60s, you could go on this Dalek ride, sit inside it and operate the appendages. Other seaside resorts offered the same thrill.

That looks depressing, even for Blackpool. Waterloo Road isn't really in the centre at all, either, so it's probably the kind of place which looks like it's suffered a zombie apocalypse, but the zombies are in actual fact too scared to go there.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

Imagine being a kid back then, though, and given the choice of the Dalek or a donkey ride...

Have you ever been to Blackpool, GM?

No, but I lived in Brighton, which is a bit like it, I think.

A bit, yeah.

Blackpool is more fun, and much cheaper.

Yeah, for a day out, I am sure. But Brighton also has the Lanes, Royal Pavillion, the Dome, and other things... the Sussex Downs.

Were you there when they had the glass animal man? He was the best thing about Brighton!

The outskirts of Blackpool though. I've been there, man. I've seen things you people wouldn't believe...

I’ve just come back from Blackpool. It’s full of cunts.

He would have been there then. On Queen's Road coming down from the station. He'd sit in his little window.

Undoubtedly. It appears that I’ve been replaced by Daleks.
