I was exposed to his documentaries from the late 40's at university and his directorial work from the 50's to the early 60's really resonates. Very much in the realism/neo realism schools, dealing with society and its problems, proto kitchen-sink IMO. If you can, see Johnny On The Run, the cinematography is superb in its depiction of Edinburgh and surrounds.
I like, a lot, his war themed films and my favourite Bond is You Only Live Twice. I consider Operation Daybreak to be an overlooked classic. Its almost shot for shot perfect and, echoing his documentary roots, plays like one. Truly great.

I love everything I've seen from them, but it's all essentially the same film, don't you think?

Yeah but you can say that of a lot of directors really.
I've seen what, seven of theirs, probably the most of any director! And the only one I didn't think was great was The Silence of Lorna.

The last one I saw was with that French actress, she's quite famous (Midnight In Paris), and I just thought 'I've seen this before'.
But....yeah. I almost included Aki Kaurismaki in my list and he's been making the same film for decades. But I love his stuff.

Operation Daybreak is fantastic. There have been a few other films telling the same story recently. I saw one The Man with The Iron Heart, it was ok but a bit pointless as O.D is so good.
