Desert Island Game.
Shamelessly stolen from elsewhere. Rather like desert island discs, but we want the ten (10) films you would take to the island with you...
Have at it!

That was the substance of discussion at home about this. I've got to a list of about 12. Which I'll need to find before I post.

Christ, that's a bloody brilliant list.
Thanks. It feels a little set in stone though, which is why I was able to fire it off without much thought. It would be nice if one or two things came along in the next few years to force themselves into my personal pantheon.

Re: Desert Island Game.
I’ll make a few lists. Here’s a list of “ten great films I could watch over and over” - similar to all of the other lists here:
Badlands
Pat Garret and Billy the Kid
In a Lonely Place
Horse Feathers
Citizen Kane
Tokyo Story
The Night of the Hunter
The Godfather 1 & 2
Jules & Jim
Vertigo
Here’s a more idiosyncratic list, geared more towards actually being alone with 10 movies forever and having endless time to watch them:
One Eyed Jacks - I could chew on this one forever. It’s unfinished enough that I could spend days at a time finishing it in my head.
It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World - Comfort food.
Heaven’s Gate - Having endless hours alone going to make me want long, slow films with beautiful visuals that I can hang onto.
Barry Lyndon - See comment above.
The New World - Ditto
Deep Throat - Not even interested in porn generally. But hey...I’m alone on an island. What else is there to do? Plus this film has a lot of youthful memories attached (long strange story).
Marjorie Morningstar - Not really a “good film” - but more comfort food, w a little bit of epic sweep to it.
Pat Garret & Billy the Kid - A holdover from the list above, as it fits my “long, slow, beautiful) criteria.
Godfather 1& 2 - see comment above.
The Beatles Anthology - I toyed with Hard Days Night...but this is better for endless revisiting.
Finally - here’s a list of films that I either haven’t seen (but have always meant to), or have seen at some point (but don’t feel like I “got” and need to revisit). As with the last list - it is weighted towards the long, slow and beautiful for maximum desert island effect:
The Dekalog
1900
The Leopard
Prince of the City
The Apu Trilogy
Stalker
Dr Zhivago
Andre Rublev
Fanny & Alexander
Tess
Badlands
Pat Garret and Billy the Kid
In a Lonely Place
Horse Feathers
Citizen Kane
Tokyo Story

Re: Desert Island Game.
Wanted to avoid ones I can more or less recite shot for shot, which knocked out Kane, Airplane! and the Marx Brothers, among others, and sticking to one per director/star/genre for no reason other than to cut down the list, and in no order
Rear window
Bringing Up Baby
Hellzapoppin
Sons of the Desert
Cries and Whispers
Monterey Pop
Godzilla vs The Thing
Singing in the Rain
The Wild Bunch
Touch of Evil
or maybe hang the rest, just the complete talkie shorts of Laurel and Hardy

It wasn't great, no. It was just that I thought, in the spirit of the thread, that I had to have a music/concert one, and I went for that rather than Woodstock for well, reasons. I liked the featured bands more. Janis, for one. I suppose, come to think of it, I could have gone for The TAMI show, because Jan and Dean are in it, but I'd have to fast forward through James Brown's panto act.
It really is godamn difficult to look back over nearly 50 years of film fandom (I started young) trying to remember and pick out 10 films

Re: Desert Island Game.
I can imagine!
It's a very good list anyway - apart from MP.
I'd love to watch all those L&H shorts again. You never see them in any UK cinemas - no special retro/festival/remaster thing or whatever. A shame.
