Dirk Bogarde
Fantastic interview with Bogarde, one of Britain's most underrated actors. His books are well worth reading as well.

Re: Dirk Bogarde
I think the world of him. As Jeemo says, an underrated actor and writer. His volumes of autobiography are especially enjoyable and well-written.
And so far as I can tell, an admirable, thoughtful and charming man who led a blameless life.

Proper old school poof (I don't mean that in a derogatory sense either). My mum was in love with him for years.

I think he may have been on friendly terms with Aneurin Bevan, So I'd steer clear Nick..just in case.

Incidentally if anyone gets the chance, watch 'The Singer Not the Song'. It is undoubtedly the (unintentionally?) campest western ever. Dirk plays a Mexican bandit with a penchant for the tightest leather!

So was mine! She read all his books.
He totally graces the films he appears in (and some of them need gracing). I watched The Damned a couple of weeks ago and he was great in that. Joseph Losey was another director that brought out the best in him. The Dirk Bogarde smirk – there’s nothing like it.
The Singer not the Song – it’s… yeah… all about the leathers.

Innit just?
Great actor , what is the name of the movie where he is that sadistic Nazi?

Re: Dirk Bogarde
It is indeed. My mum sent me the vhs once as she didn’t like it – putting it mildly. I’ve watched it a few times and I’ve gained a certain stamina for it, but it still grinds me down in the end. I’m glad it exists though. Bogarde’s comments about Belsen were interesting in that respect.

The Servant might be his best, but there are a number of contenders. I think he's got the most interesting filmography of any British actor.

I got to know him over 2 years of ill health towards the end of his life. I'd always been a fan and it was a real privilege. His true masterpiece on so many levels is Victim, but Despair and The Servant run it close.

Victim is such a brave performance from him. I can't think of a film that he didn't improve by being in it. One of my favourite actors.

The jeemo/Markus tension has the flavour of Aschenbach/Tadzio, no?
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

Terrific movie whose bravery at the time it was made (and indeed in being made at all) means it will
always be watched.

Yeah, it's great. It has these really neat visual flourishes, like the rollerskating kids when he comes out of court. Overtaken by the momentum of history!
