Montages

Postby KeithPratt » 31 Jan 2018, 11:34

By definition, a montage is "a single pictorial composition made by juxtaposing or superimposing many pictures or designs." In filmmaking, a montage is an editing technique in which shots are juxtaposed in an often fast-paced fashion that compresses time and conveys a lot of information in a relatively short period.

There are good and bad montages as always. Your best and worst ones please!

To really understand the power of montage, you need to view the Kuleshov experiment.

There are plenty examples of it on youtube.

Better get back to your Eisenstein reading, Big Lad!

It's something I associate with documentaries on subjects for which actual film footage is in short supply, a visual stop-gap, because something has to be on the screen. So the film-maker chews up time by having the camera linger over some artfully arranged photographs or something.

I noticed this a lot in Ken Burns' jazz series and I got really tired of it after a while.

Some documentaries would be better off just being books instead of movies.

I really like the montage at the end of 'Don't Look Now'.
