Huge star - pity about the films

Postby KeithPratt » 24 Nov 2017, 20:15

Sean Connery. Apart from Bond (of which only 3 are really any good), his films are pretty piss poor, apart from the Man who would be King, The Russia House and maybe the Untouchables and the Rock at a push.

Otherwise it's absolute pap.

How about Denzel Washington? Pretty much one of the greatest film actors of his generation, but he's been in a whole heap of fair-to-middling shite.

I mean, at least Michael Caine had a few career highs.

Just looking through Sean Connery's filmography on imdb, and I don't think there's anything I'd want to watch again outside of Bond. I never thought he was much of an actor though, he seemed to get through on charisma alone. I'd like to see his performance in the 1961 Anna Karenina, given how much he mastered the Russian accent 30 years later in The Hunt for Red October.

Johnny Depp, though to be fair that's only been the last few years.

How about The Hill, The Offence and Marnie?
What you mean is he didn't make many good films in the 90s and 00s.

Jesus not you.
I could list about ten good to great Michael Caine films.

Zulu
Alfie
The Harry Palmer films, particularly The Ipcress File
Too Late the Hero
the Italian Job
Get Carter
Sleuth
The Man Who Would Be King
Mona Lisa
Children of Men
The Quiet American

There's others you could make claims for too. I think we can conclude you're talking bollocks on this one!

I'm sure you could.

I could maybe list three. He's been in a SHITLOAD of bad movies.

What would your 3 be out of interest.

You're insane if you don't rate Zulu.

Brad Pitt might be my shout. There's not much beyond a couple of films.

I don’t like it at all, G.

I don’t rate Caine very highly anyway. I think he’s an empty sort of actor, somehow.

I haven’t seen The Man Who Would Be King

It's one of the great films of the 60s.
You should stick to tv soap operas like Girls!

All of those. I can also enjoy Outland, Indiana Jones and The Name Of The Rose. But, yeah, the quality control wasn’t great. He was, however, frequently the best thing about middling movies. I should also say, I love the OTTness of the Untouchables.

Caine went horrendously off the rails in the late 70s and 80s, chasing money, and then corrected himself. The list that you’ve done is great and you can add to as well. Even the cameos in Christopher Nolan movies, Children Of Men, etc were worthwhile.

There's actually really few actors who have been in consistently good films over many decades.
