The Deuce

David Simon and George Pelecanos' series on the birth of pornography.

I'm enjoying it so far - comparisons obviously with the Wire due to the writers and that quiet intensity of characterisation that one gets with the first few episodes. I'm still unsure about the James Franco twins - what sort of purpose they have is a little beyond me at the moment, but in general the performances and storylines have echoes of the Wire, which is all good by me. Maggie Gyllenhall's character is, I'm sure, set up to fall in some tragic way at some point.

I've started watching this too as I can get Sky Atlantic streamed (though unfortunately the picture quality keeps dropping watched this way).
It's getting rave reviews, largely because it's David Simons I think, but I'm a little unconvinced so far.
The period detail is great and it has a great cinematic look to it. Furthermore, the performances seem strong ( although I do have difficulty understanding some of the characters, particularly the black pimp). However little in the way of strong storylines seem to be developing so far, I don't feel I've got an awful lot back for four episodes (one of which was feature length).

The music used is fantastic I should add and I'll probably watch it for that alone!

Franco makes it hard for me to watch anything film/TV show with him in it. Just don't like or rate the dude.

i'm coming across that a lot, it seems to be quite a widely held opinion. What's he done to rub up everyone the wrong way? His acting seems fine to me.

It feels like a seedier version of his previous show with Eric Overmyer, the wrongly overlooked 'Treme' ...I hope it continues to develop and build upon the world they have created so far...Also, I have never understood people's hatred of Franco..He's doing a great job in this..
