I'm trying to think of good British films and I'm struggling:

I've not seen Ratcatcher (I do rate Morvern Callar) or Nil By Mouth

Nil By Mouth is amazing. You really should see it.

Loach's Riff Raff (1991) is pretty good.

Ratcatcher is very good indeed.
There were the odd others ..The Small Faces was a moving evocation of 60s Glasgow. But generally I agree..and the films posted so far are making your point for you (though I like Loach).

A friend at work lent me that film and for the next week we referred to each other only as "cunt". In a cockney style accent of course.

There was an old woman who worked just in front of me who ended up taking time off work for "health reasons" (she had a dicky heart). I found out afterwards that she blamed this on my bad language. Seriously.

It's a great film, and I had high hopes for Bettany. He has done some good stuff but seems to acting sporadically or in hardly promoted films. He made a come back of sorts with the avengers. I thinking he might be the stay at home da while the delightful sex kitten that is Jennifer Connelly is out working.

Mike Leigh was on a roll as there was Life is Sweet and Career Girls.

My point was they had one eye on the American market with this stuff. All that repressed Britishness and period settings. There's always an anglophile audience across the channel for that sorta thing

It's no wonder Shallow Grave and Trainspotting were such a blast of fresh air

I think a lot of what happened with British film in the 90s was a reaction to what happened in the 70s and particular the 80s.
The 80s saw moments of real confidence in British filmmaking, but it was a real see-saw ride with the industry seemingly always on the verge of collapse. The whole rise and fall story of Palace pictures sums this up. The 90s seemed to be the decade when the British film industry got pragmatic and specialised in the low to medium budget genres that they knew would find audiences. Looking back, it can all seem rather formulaic.
It's got a lot more interesting again I think in the 00s.

It's embarrassing, don't you think? I mean, a major European country with the amount of acting and technical talent we have and yet.....
