Daniel Day-Lewis Has Announced He Is To Retire From Acting.

Postby The Great Defector » 21 Jun 2017, 19:00

Daniel Day-Lewis has announced he is to retire from acting. It's a surprise - and yet not all that surprising - for an actor who made history as the first man to win three best actor Oscars, but who is also famous for leaving years between roles.

I voted good.

But I find him better than good.

The Best Ever accolade I would probably not hand out to any actor; there's just too many candidates around, and every day I'd choose a different list.

Oh, and he looks strikingly handsome, I saw him on the Beeb early today.
The invisible and the non-existing very much look alike.

A damn good career. At least half a dozen classic performances. I'd say he's up there with the best.

He's retired before. Great natural actor apart from his scenery chewing in Gangs of New York

I was always waiting for DDL to bring his famously stringent in-character method acting schtick to re-interpreting the Kenneth More role in a remake of Reach For The Sky

Lots of truly great performances. Not so many truly great films.

Aye.

I think There Will Be Blood is great.

The rest?

He'll be back. He flounced after The Boxer after having a very busy 10 years. Then the wife got him back onscreen after a long hiatus. He could be serious of course, there could be private reasons, but I think he needs an air of finality in order to properly recharge. Looking forward to Phantom Thread -- DDL and PTA together again!

Really? You don't consider Age of Innocence, Name of the Father, My Left Foot great films? A man of high standards

I've not seen the Age of Innocence but I wouldn't consider the rest great, no. Very good perhaps.

Do mean films that would go down as the one of the best ever type of films?

the same has always been true. you watch something like "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" and you'd be hard pressed to know why it was a big deal were it not for Spencer Tracy dying before your eyes and K.Hepburn getting all torn up about it.

my point is that a great performance is often enough and can actually lift a pretty okay movie to somewhere near greatness.

I think DDL is a serious and gifted talent. I hope he makes more films but even if he doesn't I think he's left a tremendous body of very good work.
