A big yay for me, especially for his 00s work. Inland Empire and Mulholland Dr. are absolutely stunning, heads and shoulders above his already largely top-notch work up to that point.

2017 Twin Peaks - Haven't seen.
2006 Inland Empire - Haven't seen.
2001 Mulholland Drive - Convoluted as hell, but stylistically great.
1999 The Straight Story - Fantastic. Possibly my favorite. It is TOTALLY Lynch stylistically, yet he manages to do that and keep his G-rating (he got away with one "damn" and one "hell" iirc.
1999 Mulholland Dr. (TV Movie) - Never saw it. Does it differ much?
1997 Lost Highway - Think I saw it, but don't remember it.
1992 Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me - Haven't seen.
1990-1991 Twin Peaks (TV Series) - Petered out a bit at the end, but still great. He basically invented TV series as they exist now.
1990 Wild at Heart - Hated the fucking thing. Humorless, nasty, ugly. I have a lot of tolerance for dark and/or scatological humor, but this had nothing else at its heart.
1986 Blue Velvet - Overrated, and suffers from a BIT of what plagued the one after, but still creates some amazing characters, and DOES have heart buried within its misanthrope somewhere.
1984 Dune - Couldn't get through it.
1980 The Elephant Man - Other contender for best. The only time he humanized otherness rather than the reverse.
1977 Eraserhead - Difficult to watch in parts, but a one-of-a-kind movie. Really set the style.

Some filmmakers come off as defenders of the underdog, some are misanthropes who find ugliness in humanity. He's the only one I can think of that does both in equal measure. It's something impressive to manage, but I do find some of what he does unwatchable, or at least very unpleasant. And he does tend to get lost in his quirks sometimes. That's why I love "The Straight Story" so much and think he really pulled off the ideal combination. And it's proof he doesn't need decapitated heads and "freaks" to pull it off. The real world is strange enough as it is.

I voted 'yay', but my vote is really "Footy."

Yay, I'm a huge fan of his work. Mulholland Drive is one of my favorite films ever and Twin Peaks is television at its finest whenever he's directing the episodes.

The Staight Story and The Elephant Man are indicators of what might have been.

I think it absolutely did. It's an intensely romantic film for one. Granted there is some other weird shit in there but at its heart it's a love story, albeit a fucked up one

I watched Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me just this afternoon – a big screen opportunity. The only Lynch film I’d never seen in its entirety. There’s a sequence beginning with the wind in the trees and ending with the illuminated caravan that’s among the best Lynch ever. Fantastic stuff. At one point we we see a telegraph pole with phone lines etc. but the phone lines are a red herring because the real “message” is carried in the telegraph pole itself – hence the Log Lady.

I think Lynch gives us a clue when Bobby calls Leo to arrange a drug deal, and obviously he doesn’t say “cocaine” but “Christmas tree” (or something). Transposing that code to the visual realm, what we see is not what’s actually there. Laura’s mum sits chain-smoking and looking in the mirror.

The bit in the train carriage where Laura’s guardian angel departs is really moving. And then later in the strange room where Leland’s geometry has been severely re-arranged and Laura’s looking up at her guardian angel who’s floating in the air and may even come down to earth again – is it redemption, or reprieve, or hell? So fucked up.

The Venus in the room at the end is great. Presumably it’s a fake – but in this scene that Lynch has contrived, it doesn’t matter and can’t be proved one way or the other. Can it?

Lynch is one of the greats, in my opinion. You just don’t know where the fuck you are when you watch him. My personal favourite is Lost Highway. The one I can’t get with is Dune. His Golden Triangle is Lost Highway – The Straight Story – Mulholland Dr.

2017 Twin Peaks – shaping up very well. After my initial disappointment I’m on board
2006 Inland Empire – I should watch it again. It was pretty impenetrable first time round
2001 Mulholland Drive – 5 stars. masterpiece
1999 The Straight Story – Haven’t seen
1997 Lost Highway – Wasn’t that fussed about this one. It seemed like Mulholland Drive but without as much heart
1992 Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me – 5 stars
1990-1991 Twin Peaks (TV Series) -- at its best, and the Lynch directed episodes usually are the best, my favourite TV show ever 5 stars
1990 Wild at Heart – 4 stars. Rollicking good romantic yarn
1986 Blue Velvet – 5 stars. Maybe his best film
1984 Dune – A failed experiment but still interesting. The design of the movie is fantastic
1980 The Elephant Man – 5 stars.
1977 Eraserhead – 5 stars.

Pretty much in-line with my take - I didn't bond with Lost Highway but I do plan to watch it again.
Find a nice weekend afternoon where you have nothing on and watch the Straight Story, I love that movie although I have no intention of watching it again.
