Films that could've been better with another director.
I got this thread idea from watching Speed last night. It had been years since I had seen the film and it happened to be on TV late at night, so I indulged by watching some action shlock. Throughout the film, I kept thinking how much better this film could have been (keep Dennis Hopper and Jeff Daniels in the cast, though) if the Mad Max version of George Miller directed it. Could you imagine how intense and visually interesting those bus sequences would have been with Miller calling the shots? So, what are some other films that could have been better with another director?

I really wound my wife up last time we watched Speed, she loves it, and it annoys the shit out of me. Dennis Hopper blowing up his own quite impressive house, and everything it contains, as a side-offshoot of a $3M ransom demand? That scene were the bus jumps over the gap too, what a pile of cack, it leaps into the air despite driving fairly slowly off a flat bit of tarmac. And the airport at the end, imagine being the chief exec there who made the decision to keep the airport operational, despite having a bus with a bomb on it driving round and round in circles on it's tarmac. Why didn't he just hold the fucking airport to ransom for $20M? I can't imagine what would've saved that film, other than a different plot. I'd keep Jeff Daniels and Dennis Hopper though, obviously.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

It's all ridiculous nonsense. But you always keep Daniels and Hopper. Even in the worst of films, they can provide entertainment and characterization.

I'm sure that those 'Hobbit' movies would have been better with Del Toro directing, as originally planned.

8mm. Fuck Joel Schumacher for many bad films, this included.

'Hardcore' by Paul Schrader. Not that it's not already a good movie, because it is, but if Scorsese had been given a chance to work the same kind of magic that he did with Schrader's 'Taxi Driver' script I think the film would've been incredible and more than just one out of a dozen people would know that it even exists.

8mm by Gasper Noe might've been a bit interesting.

Agreed. Also would add Michael Mann as a potentially interesting director for Speed.

Then again, Gaspar Noe would probably make any film a bit interesting.

A good friend of mine who is a LOTR nut, says the hobbit stories are more for kids and Del Toro would make them too dark. He wasn't expecting much from them because of this.

They are more lighthearted but I think that would underestimate Del Toro's tact for the source material. Both Pacific Rim and Hellboy can get weird, sure enough, but as for them being *dark*, at least in the sense of grimness, it doesn't seem to be the case for me. I think Del Toro would have probably tried to respect the original tone or added his own eye to it instead of making it the "Lord of the Rings prequel trilogy" it was in the end made out to be.

I might have actually watched the Hobbit films if Del Toro had been the director.

hell, I think John Boorman was the great coulda-was Lord of the Rings director & he most certainly would not have been making them for children.

8mm is a good choice...The producers originally wanted David Fincher and he might have done a better job...Using him would have also prevented Schumacher from hacking up the first script by Andrew Kevin Walker ('Seven')...
