The Final Cut is kind of the definitive version. It's the director's cut of the director's cut with a few more edits here and there to clean up the odd little mistakes. There are others available but that one's the most well known version now.

Is the final version different than the Director's cut? This is where I get confused...

To answer your question: I think my feelings towards sci-fi are mostly rooted in being personally a bit sucky a science and also being exposed to too much of the cheesier side of the genre.

You saw the newest? I actually thought it was a better film (though that also speaks to me not necessarily being the greatest fan of the original, even if I still think it's generally very good). Thoughts?

I didn't save my list or I'd share it. If Al has it he's certainly free to post it, but I think I remember most of it. A couple big ones that didn't make it here were The Last Picture Show, and Hud.

No, I haven't seen the new one, but I've read a lot of good things about it and my interest has been piqued.

Looking at my list I'm reminded of how many wonderful films Turner Classic Movies has introduced me to. I should send them an Xmas present.

It is, but not in essence. It corrects a couple of things that at least from my memory don't really change the meaning - either in terms of themes, story or emotion - a whole lot. Mostly things like the number of escaped replicants or the colour of the sky at the end and so on. It's arguably the best but I don't think it matters much if you watch one or the other. But I could be wrong.

Ok. Thanks for clarifying. I'll have to take driftin's word here since I've read him going on about this film for years now and he clearly has a passion.

And thanks for posting my list, Al. I kinda wish I would've taken more time in making it but whatever...

For a guy who doesn't talk much about films you have pretty good taste :D

Three Colours: White though? I can forgive the dodgy 80s slashers and 21st century horror films that no one else remembers but that one?

Damn, have I really been that loud about it?

The passion is sincere though. Can't get enough of that film and now can't get enough of the sequel - words I never thought I'd say.

I think I was largely struggling to make a list of 50 films, and it has been a while since I've watched a film for anything other than something to talk over while I have a glass or two of wine. I need to get back to watching films rather than reading or playing on the bloody PS4, on the rare occasion I get the TV to myself. I picked White because I remember it being funnier than the other two. They're largely very dry films, and I don't think this takes itself quite as seriously (with story points such as free air travel by hiding in a suitcase).

Nice to see all of your full lists. In a lot of cases, the most interesting choices are the ones that didn’t make the cull.

Mine is a bit “safer” and “USA-centric” than I intended. Hard to fit in too many personal choices when squeezing the whole history of film into 50 slots. Especially given the fact that I went with the “top of the head” method and comes lies the list in 5 minutes.

I spread the points around equally:

The Night of the Hunter
Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid
In a Lonely Place
Don't Look Now
Badlands
Margaret
Detour
Dog Day Afternoon
The Tree of Life
Knife in the Water
The Passion of Joan of Arc
One-Eyed Jacks
Cutter's Way
Ikiru
The Beguiled
Straight Time
Seconds
Rosemary's Baby
Election
Tokyo Story
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre
The Thin Red Line
2001: A Space Odyssey
The Deer Hunter
Crimes & Misdemeanors
Last Tango in Paris
3 Women
Five Easy Pieces
Annie Hall
Jules and Jim
Taxi Driver
M
The Wild Bunch
The Grapes of Wrath
Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia
Out of the Past
A Streetcar Named Desire
Network
The Good, The Bad & The Ugly
Duck Soup
Psycho
A Woman Under the Influence
Frankenstein
Barry Lyndon
Days of Heaven
The Conversation
Heaven's Gate
The Wages of Fear
The Godfather
The Godfather Part

I'm not surprised. It's an unpleasant, unseemly film, to put it briefly and mildly.
But we can't all rate the same things or it would be a dull old world, eh.

yeah. I'm hoping you just haven't seen it and are reacting to something you read somewhere because I seriously can't fathom the mindset one would have to have in order to see it that way. Not finding Harold and Maude life affirming and beautiful and deeply, deeply touching I can get, but finding it unpleasant and unseemly is just...

I mean, Ruth Gordon is an incandescent joy in that film, Bud Cort is marvellous, the supporting cast are tremendous, and every scene (aside from the awkward Tarzan scream) is perfectly directed by Ashby. How anyone can watch the scene in Golden Gate Military Cemetery with the flowers, or the Dreyfus scene with the birds and the subtle pan to Harold noticing Maude's concentration camp tattoo, or the scene where Harold and Maude are sitting in Emeryville looking across the bay at the fireworks in the Wharf and Maude throws the ring into the bay so she will "always know where it is" and think that the film is unpleasant and unseemly is astonishing to me.

It's one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen -- a beautiful, lovely film about learning to love and embrace life.

You have not actually seen it have you? Or did you see it at a bad point in your life or something? I mean...wow. Honestly, I have never known anyone who has seen the film that wasn't moved by Harold and Maude. Never. It's in the top ten of all of my IRL friends and in some way it's a benchmark film for me in assessing people. Different strokes and de gustabus and all that but that film is fundamental to my world.

An odd comment. What's unseemly about it? They're both over age (and how!)

It's a great, moving film. if I meet somebody who likes that movie I am predisposed to liking them. Martha's right, it's just one of those movies.

I wish I included it in my list. It's one of those films that absolutely goes for broke in its concept and leaves the viewer utterly exhausted. I saw it three or four years ago and I still can't get it out of my mind.

Anyway, cheers al for putting this list together: that's a quixotic number one (and again I'm assuming that most people are preferring the directors' cut), and it's fun to see how the whole thing turned out. I think there's a good mix between the populist and the classic over all.
It's before my time but I've been told, he never came back from Karangahape Road.

Mine is a bit “safer” and “USA-centric” than I intended. Hard to fit in too many personal choices when squeezing the whole history of film into 50 slots. Especially given the fact that I went with the “top of the head” method and comes lies the list in 5 minutes.
