I don't get that one either, but people seem to really like Bill Murray.

I like him in everything I've seen him in - just not that one!

Me too, i've liked Murray in pretty much everything i've seen him in. He has excellent comic timing, a very expressive face, but he also has the ability to play a very serious or unguarded moment with great believability.

'Groundhog Day' is one of my favourite romantic comedies because it's full of excellent dialogue, very funny moments, a great supporting cast with interesting characters, and a take on life and love i find really personal and thoughtful.

I like Groundhog Day but it's not a "favourite film" or anything. It's just a good comedy with a strong, memorable hook.

It's a likeable film for sure. I do remember feeling that the film ran out of legs about two-thirds of the way through as the main conceit became over-extended.

I think it's great. it's like "it's a wonderful life" for baby boomers. he becomes a better person but largely because he's bored and has run out of other options. LOL.

i love it, it happifies me to watch it, although i didn't put it on my list. i agree with snee about the it's a wonderful life feel.

i love the process he goes through in how he defines seizing the same day. it's a wonderful message in the end. it has a magical yet goofy, funny, dark, touching vibe to it. yeah, it may go all over the top or get clunky, but it still is sweet. life-affirming in the face of cynicism and selfishness.

i think i value it more the older i get. sigh.

New batch is up. Next couple of weeks will be slow since I'm in the process of a move, sorry guys. Anyhow, pretty good batch this one! I got my second inclusion in the list so far, I believe (edit: actually fourth)...

Really don't get Groundhog Day. The structure is so repetitive. Actively dislike it.

I love that aspect of it. The day after day after day grind of a life that he can't escape, punctuated by his realization that everything he does - everything - matters when he adds it up in his mind at the end of the day. The way he tries over and over to just get into Andy McDowell's character's pants, day after day, to no avail. The way he tries to save the homeless man day after day, to no avail, or saves the kid who falls out of the tree, or learns to play the piano over months of 'first lessons'. It's kind of sad but also really touching, and quite romantic when they fall in love, properly.

It's a funny but touching film for me, and the structure is an integral part.

It's the glossiness, the bland direction that turns me off.

It's not Citizen Kane, sure, but the camera angles don't always factor into why I might love a film.

I'm not even talking about it as an artistic choice. I'm saying that the repetition actually makes it an unpleasant watch for me.

I think I've fallen asleep almost every time I've tried to watch it (including when it was new). I did force myself to stay awake all through it once. I still can't say that I enjoyed it.

I'm on the "good, not great" side of the argument here. I like it, I think it's an interesting story, it's funny and endearing, it provides a nice couple of hours' worth of entertainment. I am also in agreement with Coan that personally I find it too flat and standard formally to really see it as a favorite over other more creative comedies out there, but I can understand its appeal with some all the same. I am less surprised by its appearance in the list this time around than I was last time, where it climbed to the top 20 with a whopping six votes or so. In all honesty, in a list that already features films like Blazing Saddles, Airplane! and The Blues Brothers I don't see this one being so egregious in the spot it's in.

I like the fact that at joint 60, we have Cool Hand Luke, and Luke before he loses his hand. Two blockbuster films with a messianic theme set 10 years apart, but I can't say as the 10 years look like an artistic progression. Not to knock Star Wars for not being as good as Cool Hand Luke though, I actually think the first film in the franchise is a fine film in its own right. It's just a depressing trajectory from there.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

Fange has already captured its enduring appeal of Groundhog Day for me - an endless gag reel with a heart. Surprised it's attracted so much nose holding.

Are the points correct for Veronique and The Shining?

Yes, how come? They have priority over the rest due to having more overall votes - points work as a tiebreaker.

Hadn't twigged that the number of people voting triumphed the actual points each film got. Cheers.
