Netflix pointers

Postby Neige » 16 Jan 2017, 11:28

Tired of waiting for DVD versions, I've just started the free trial month with Netflix, basically to watch Seasons 4 of Orange Is The New Black and Orphan Black, and the new episodes of Black Mirror... (oooh, there seems to be a rather monochrome pattern here!  )

I've watched Episode 1 of A Series of Unfortunate Events after being impressed by the trailer and am not sure whether I'll persevere: It's extremely pretty to look at, but rather slow-paced and the Mad-Men-style guy playing Lemony Snicket gets on my tits. I suppose his character is very faithful to the books...

Binge-watching 7 seasons of Breaking Bad or Sons of Anarchy seems a bit much at this point, but I might take the plunge with Deadwood (only 3 seasons).

Anything else anyone would recommend?

Is there a way of searching their database without signing up?

Here's a link to a site with what's available for me here in Switzerland.

They have 2192 items, while the US version has 5135.

Bloodline is good, but slow.
Person of Interest is good fun
Look for some documentaries- a decent range.

Black Mirror. All excellent, some bleaker than others. The 3rd episode is quite the darkest thing I've seen in years.
We're usually skipping around the function room in our long-johns by now...

Aside from those mentioned elsewhere - and the many fine docs up there, these are a few that I've liked

House of Cards (Splendid US adapt of the UK original from about 25 years ago(

Narcos (Splendid retelling of the life and times of Pablo Escobar)

Inside No 9 (V good if you like the League of Gentlemen/Psychoville)

Jessica Jones (Good Marvel comic book adapt with more story than CGI)

Bleak House (Excellent Dickens adaptation - not sure if still up)

At UK£8, a monthly netflix sub is pretty damn good value if you watch a lot of TV. Big problem is that they always seem to release something you want to watch just as your subscription is about to lapse

Yeah, I'd def watch HoC.
The last 10 seconds of season 4 were jaw-dropping if you'd been watching from the start.

I really enjoyed Maria Bamford's loosely-autobiographical mini-series Lady Dynamite - but then, I love Maria Bamford. Your mileage may vary. Try the first episode and if you don't like that, you probably won't like the rest either. :)
