The Room

Postby Dr Markus » 29 Dec 2016, 15:06

It’s not just bad – it’s intoxicatingly awful. But The Room has developed a cult following – and so has its mysterious creator, writes Nicholas Barber

Has anyone actually seen this?

Yes and I'm pretty sure we've discussed it here before.

I don't get the love. Far from "so bad it's good," it's so bad it's thoroughly terrible. Relentlessly incoherent and inept (and not in a good way), it's a train wreck on every level. I like to champion the underdog and all, but the guy who made it is just incompetent.

Oh well!

The lass bought me a pair of Tommy Wiseau pants for xmas. The package came with a signed photo of Tommy.

I adore it. It's magnificent.

Reasonable minds may disagree!

Obviously it's not for everybody. You either dig it or you don't but if you dig it you'll really dig it. It's objectively terrible on every level but there is something unintentionally awful and funny in damn near every scene.

Some of the actors were worried that they auditioned for a porno by mistake?

I know I've discussed it with Snarfy before. I personally get some enjoyment out of its sheer incompetence, but as with so many of these "so bad it's good" movies you have to be willing to sit through an awful lot of dull moments, that are just coherent enough to not tumble on the side of absurd hilarity; and I also find that it is much better to watch a bad film along with a group of people than it is alone, since poking fun at the film while it plays is part of the amusement and you can't do that on your own. Plenty of alcohol is recommended too.

All this aside I can understand how the film can just play out as terrible for some, but what I cannot, under any means, understand is how someone may come out of this with their sense of irony and post-modernity so twisted that they may call it a legitimately *good*, let alone great, film. It's absolute rubbish and entertains only because one can laugh at it, never with it.

Of course, with the recent rise to fame of Neil Breen one has to wonder if Tommy Wiseau's reign of awful is at its end.

Pretty much agree with algroth's assessment. Watching the rifftrax version with the commentary of the Mystery Science Theater 3000 cast over it is an improvement.

Watching it with other people and by playing the official Room drinking game (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/DrinkingGame/TheRoom) is the only way to fully enjoy the absurdity.
