Blu-ray

Postby naughty boy » 04 Oct 2016, 11:22

I'm getting a Blu-ray player soon and I'm excited. My concern is that many of the reviews of the discs talk about poor transfers.

Two questions:

1) do you own many Bluray discs and do you find the picture quality noticeably better than with DVDs?

2) what specific Bluray editions (films especially) would you recommend, considering mostly the quality of the print but also things like extras? (you could also give warnings as to what to avoid, if you've had any bad experiences)

Thanks!

Unless you really love the film or the film maker and are prepared to shell out a little extra for lovingly assembled sets like those issued by Criterion, think extras are generally a waste of space that you are unlikely to get viewed more than once - if that

David Lean movies are awesome on bluray but you need a good telly to see the full benefit.

Yes, but you probably won't notice it if you have a largish-screen HD TV.

I find blu ray can almost be TOO sharp in terms of clear picture.

Ok. Thanks.

I've ordered around 10 Blurays from Amazon - many of them are the same price (even less in some cases) than the DVDs, so I'm not losing out.

I need a region free one because I have a ton of American dvds

Go to bluray.com for reviews of what you want to buy. There are other online sites where you can read about the transfers before purchasing as well. That's what I do. If you don't, sometimes you'll get burned and purchase a disc which looks no better than a DVD. And I echo the sentiments expressed earlier. To really appreciate the difference you need a big, wide-screen TV. As big as your wallet can handle...

That's a useful website - thanks, Matt.

Yeah, I got a 40' TV, it's pretty big (bigger than standard) but not huge. I'm pleased 2001 was my first-ever Bluray 'experience'...
