Holly my eight year old son watches it a lot. He recognises that the songs are parodies of pop songs (I was playing Bohemian Rhapsody the other day and he said "this is the Mary queen of Scots song") -and he learns some reasonably accurate history too!
I kept thinking "swim as far as you can, swim as far as you can".

Yes yet another example of the sheer brilliance of the BBC.

Books are great too.

And we really liked Yonderland too (which is written by and stars many of the HH people).

The Morrissey/Dickens song is worth mentioning, too, but the favourite in our house is Joan of Arc/Jessie J. "Your smart remarks go round the houses, you're guilty of heresy... and wearing men's trousers."
That series with that cast (other versions aren't so great) is something I suspect my kids will never grow out of and, even if they do, I very much doubt that I will.

It's a bit tricky for my daughter (7, English as a second language and doesn't have the cultural context to get a lot of the references) but I make her watch it because it's absolutely superb and I thoroughly enjoy it. She's happy to sit through it as long as she can watch Operation Ouch afterwards...

The Henry Viii song, the four Georges, the Vikings as above. There was a lot of great stuff on those shows.

I liked the books as a child. Local lad is Terry Deary.
