Fuck it

Droid has something that needs to get to the resistance
Droid found in the desert by unknowing Jedi
Finds a mentor
Mentor gets killed
Only way to "win" is to destroy the big ship by hitting it in a certain spot.
Unknowing Jedi cops on she's a Jedi and goes to find the one person who can train her.

That's pretty much the story for the original and JJ''s. There's a few differences, but at the heart of it, it's pretty much the same film.

That's off the top of my head, I thought of more but can't remember them at the minute.

Yeah Han was a mentor imho. I think the parallels are a bit lazy because they're so similar. The film is great as single film, I loved it, just disappointed by the story.

I thought there were a lot of parallels, but I liked that.

It's a reboot. I think the referencing was done brilliantly - we got nods to the OT not only with the old characters, but in so many of the aesthetics (Rey's force awakening in particular with the bit from Empire when Luke is fighting Darth in Bespin) and the cinematography. In fact I think the film really could have done with another 15 minutes or so - I really enjoyed the start when Rey was on Jakku.

The most important thing for me was that we have a great female lead.

Anyway, I was NOT expecting solo to get killed. That was a big surprise.

Are Rey and Kylo twins or at least brother and sister?

When "child Rey" shouts "come back", is that the millennium falcon disappearing off?

What will be the significance of the max von sydow character? Presumably he looked after young Rey?

I thought it was a blast. I loved it and they way they combined old and new elements so it could be enjoyed by old and younger fans alike. It seemed to have a bit of magic that I found lacking in Episodes I to III

Neither was I. I'm disappointed as Ford was a real welcome presence in the movie and I'm a bit sad knowing he won't feature again.

It is well known that Ford wanted Solo to die in ROTJ so I wasn't surprised.

Either siblings or cousins, I guess. The theory is that Luke and Mrs/Han and Leia left Rey on Jakku under the watchful eye of von Sydow, in order to protect her... which would make more sense if she were Luke's daughter, seeing as Han and Leia didn't leave their son there.

All will presumably be explained in the next film.

Han Solo dying was the one moment watching the film where I actually gasped; I did not expect that. A lessor shock was that Kylo Ren was the son of Han and Leia, I had sort of assumed he was Luke's son. The nods to the older characters were nice (Admiral Ackbar!) but I'm also glad the focus was on the newer characters (although some dialogue from Luke would have been nice).

Overall, I loved it. I saw it in IMAX 3D which sort of did my head in!
He tries.

Do people really think the dude playing the Kylo Ren was good?

Gotta be. Twins are in the family. It was that was in the (since disavowed) extended universe, too.
Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

I watched it yesterday. It was like a live gig by a film franchise, they did newer versions of all the old set pieces everyone used to love. Hung together as a film ok, and was certainly better than at least two of the previous films (I never saw episode III). Might have been better than the originals, they tended to annoy me anyway.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

Saw it yesterday too, and enjoyed it a lot. It hung together really well as an action film i think, it's pacing was generally really well done. A couple moments seemed a bit too rushed though for me, like when Han and Leia are discussing what's happened to their son - a huge plot point, but one that seems to be have been given just enough time and emotion to kind of explain thing before they got back to the action. Maybe there will be more explanation in the coming movies, though maybe not from Han...
I think Rey is Luke's daughter.

I thought most of the humour and gags were pretty good - especially the old Han and Chewie team - but the "why are you nodding your head like that?" one was a bit forced.
