yeah we should have a thread where he does it for everyone else

I was surprised he'd seen so many of Beenieman's films! :)

What can I say, just because a lot of those aren't necessarily my thing, doesn't mean I wont give them a go. Why, I might even watch them to the end! :)
It's before my time but I've been told, he never came back from Karangahape Road.

That's what my top 50 is. The 50 movies I've seen to the end. Just kidding :D

10

Brazil (1985)
Directed by Terry Gilliam

Voters: Algroth (11), Snarfyguy (5), Martha (5), Ghost of Harry Smith (6), the masked man (6), kath (5), geoffcowgill (8), Jeff K (5), whodathunkit (6)

I've always thought this looked pretty bad but I'll try to see it soon.

9

This is Spinal Tap (1984)
Directed by Rob Reiner

Voters: Polishgirl (5), Goat Boy (5), the masked man (5), rock the kaspar (4), The RightGraduate Profile (3), whodathunkit (2), Sgt Pepper (5), Fangedango! (5), Rocky Bronzino (3), toomanyhatz (3)

I've never got round to this. Always seemed like humour in the Hogans Heroes vein e.g. let's see how funny we can make POW camps. I'll put it on the to watch list though.

8

Don't Look Now (1973)
Directed by Nicolas Roeg

Voters: Ghost of Harry Smith (4), Goat Boy (5), BlueMeanie (3), Thesiger (8), the masked man (8), TopCat G (3), The RightGraduate Profile (3), Davey Avon FatBoy (8), whodathunkit (5), toomanyhatz (2)

I saw this for the first time about 10 years ago. No recolexction of it being great though Sutherland & Christie are both often unlikable.

7

Apocalypse Now (1979)
Directed by Francis Ford Coppola

Voters: Snarfyguy (5), martha (1), Goat Boy (5), Thesiger (2), beenieman (5), TopCat G (10), rock the kaspar (10), Sgt Pepper (5), Fangedango! (5), PENK (3)

This made by list. The comments about it being prog are spot on. I saw it once in a 360 degree theatre, like at Disneyland etc. You stood or sat on the floor. What an experience!

6

Rear Window (1954)
Directed by Alfred Hitchcock

Voters: meetthesonics (5), Polishgirl (5), BlueMeanie (6), kath (5), geoffcowgill (8), All mimsy (5), The RightGraduate Profile (6), Owen (7), Sgt Pepper (5), toomanyhatz (6)

Good movie, one of Hitch's best. He's no longer a Top 100 director though.

5

The Godfather, Part II (1974)
Directed by Francis Ford Coppola

Voters: GoogaMooga (5), martha (1), Ghost of Harry Smith (4), Goat Boy (5), Thesiger (2), rock the kaspar (4), Davey Avon FatBoy (5), whodathunkit (8), Owen (4), Sgt Pepper (5), Rocky Bronzino (10)

I probably should have voted for this. A magnificent movie. Godfather 3's not as bad as people say either.

4

Citizen Kane (1941)
Directed by Orson Welles

Voters: Snarfyguy (5), mentalist (slight return) (5), Thesiger (6), the masked man (6), geoffcowgill (6), All mimsy (5), The RightGraduate Profile (3), Davey Avon FatBoy (5), whodathunkit (6), Owen (4), Fangedango! (5)

First saw this when I was about 14. Age has not treated it well.

3

The Third Man (1949)
Directed by Carol Reed

Voters: Snarfyguy (5), BlueMeanie (10), TopCat G (10), geoffcowgill (5), rock the kaspar (4), All mimsy (2), The RightGraduate Profile (10), Davey Avon FatBoy (5), Owen (7), Sgt Pepper (5), toomanyhatz (4)

Last time I tried this I didn't get very far. I'll try again but from memory there were too many shadows.

2

Casablanca (1942)
Directed by Michael Curtiz

Voters: meetthesonics (5), martha (1), Ghost of Harry Smith (2), mentalist (slight return) (5), kath (5), geoffcowgill (5), rock the kaspar (20), All mimsy (7), Davey Avon FatBoy (5), whodathunkit (4), Owen (7), Sgt Pepper (5)

A great movie & time to see it again.

1 (STAND UP, CHAMP)

The Godfather (1972)
Directed by Francis Ford Coppola

Voters: meetthesonics (5), GoogaMooga (5), Goat boy (5), mentalist (slight return) (5), Thesiger (2), TopCat G (3), geoffcowgill (8), rock the kaspar (20), Jeff K (5), Davey Avon FatBoy (5), whodathunkit (8), Owen (5), Sgt Pepper (5), Rocky Bronzino (10), PENK (5), Brer Baron (4)

Loks like everyone but me voted for it. I probably should have too.

I thought the same thing yesterday. This has to have been one of the greatest, sustained wind-ups in BCB history.

Béla Tarr needs more support. No, seriously, a nice, warm hug every once in a while would do him wonders, at least until he starts dismissing them as a stagnant rutinary excercise that tries in vain to blind us from the bleakness of existence.

Werckmeister Harmonies is the only one of his I've seen and I thought that he would make a much better cinematographer than director. Beautifully filmed, but perhaps the thinnest film I've ever seen.
I'd not be averse to trying one of his others to see if I could get more out of it, though.

Thinnest? How come?

It's my favourite cinematic riddle:stately, sinister and even erotic, as Delphine Seyrig looks magnificent throughout. It's a film I can go back to again and again and find new details. If you like the films of Nicolas Roeg or Chris Nolan, you need to see this.

Absolutely. I'll also recommend, while we're at it, both Mamoru Oshii's Angel's Egg and Hugo Santiago's Invasión, the latter with a screenplay by Jorge Luis Borges and Adolfo Bioy Casares no less. Both utterly brilliant, and feature the same kind of perversion or time and space that Last Year in Marienbad employs, and are almost equally sinister, moody and enigmatic experiences. They are not just dreamlike, they are gateways to another dimension. As much as I love Chris Nolan, his films look like the works of Michael Bay compared to these.

Thanks for those recommendations. I almost can't believe I've never seen Marienbad. It sounds right up my alley. The others I haven't even heard of but will look out for.
