BCB 100 - U2

Postby geoffcowgill » 23 Jul 2006, 17:50

As a teen they were my favorite going-concern band. Not so much anymore, but The Joshua Tree still holds up as monumental album for me.

Favorite Album - The Joshua Tree

Favorite Song - "A Sort of Homecoming"

Do we really like them all that much? I had the impression the vast majority here were in the "well, I like a few songs" camp. I am, anyway, and the one I like most is She Moves in Mysterious Ways.

The Modernist

For song I'd have "Miss Sarajevo", if I'm not allowed that then "The Unforgettable Fire".
Album? no thanks.

I agree with Ed, I would say they are a bit of a minority taste on here.

I love this band and remember first seeing them in 1980. I have always rated them although I wasn't a huge fan of the period between Zooropa and Pop they are an incredible band both in the studio and live :D

Best Album: October
Best Song: I Still Haven't Found What I'm looking For

'I Will Follow' is a great tune but that's about as far as I go with these guys. Oh, I like 'Gloria' too. I suppose I like them when they're being young and earnest and purposeful rather than middle-aged, incredibly po-faced and burdened with messianic tendencies.

Still, I do really like the two I've mentioned.

Bungo the Mungo

I quite like 'em. I'm of the right age. It may be unfortunate, but they didn't pass anybody by who was born, say, between 1960 and 1975. They might not admit it, but it's true - we've all got a soft spot.

Have we got this far without anyone saying 'messiah complex'? Well done!

Album: Zooropa

Single: Even Better Than The Real Thing

First band I ever saw - although most of their albums are pretty mundane affairs, they have occasionally hit some heights. Unfortunately, too much of their most popular work ("The Joshua Tree", all their recent albums) has been empty, chest-beating blather. On the other hand, their early 90s work is seriously undervalued.

Single: She Moves In Mysterious Ways - oddly enough, their attempts at indie-dance were right on the button.

Album: October - it meant a lot to me when I was 16.

The most inconsistent commercially successful band ever? I love some of their records passionately, find some of them boring as hell. Bono needs to be smacked at times, but he's also given us some great vocal performances. And it's pretty hard to deny that the Edge has his own guitar style, Verlaine-influenced though it may be. Taken as a whole, I'm glad they're around.

Album - Achtung Baby or War
Song - One

Pretty much sums it up for me. Saw them during the War tour, and it was equal parts ridiculous meglomania and inspired passion. But then, that's U2 in a nutshell, innit it?

Me too.

I used to love U2, but hated War and couldnt be bothered for a while, won me back with The Joshua Tree, lost me again with Pop, and apart from some great moments on ATYCLB, I just cant be arsed anymore.

Song - So Cruel or Till The End Of The World

Album - Joshua Tree

I remember when i first started to take notice of U2 was when their best of 1980-90 was being promoted. I looked at the tracklisting, and saw so many songs that i knew and loved, but didn't know they were all by them. Fantastic stuff. Pretty tricky to pick a favourite track. I've liked 'Staring At The Sun' since i first heard it, plus i like most of the stuff on the 80-90 compilation. Then there's One, and i really like 'Vertigo' too.

If pushed, i'd probably go for

Album - The Joshua Tree
Single - With Or Without You (don't start, i'm not listening)

OK Bono can be a bit tiresome but they have produced an enormous number of utterly brilliant songs. If i had to pick one song and album I'd say:

Out of Control

and

Achtung Baby

For an album I'd say Achtung Baby but I'd steal Unforgettable Fire as the track.

A band i feel just about scrape into the top 100 because they have had a a massive impact, although to my mind the impact is not in proportion to their musical talent.

Album: Unforgettable Fire

It's probably down to my age and lack of musical knowledge when it was released but I was taken aback by the sheer atmospheric nature and artiness of it.

Track: Sweetest Thing

I'm not sure of the story behind this. Was it an old track to support a greatest hits or something? Anyway, at a time when they had become totally overblown it was a reminder that they did actually have the ability to write a pretty decent tune.
