BCB 100 - The White Stripes

Postby geoffcowgill » 18 Jul 2006, 22:13

All gimmickry aside, they've put out some pretty fun music. Elephant is my favorite at this point, but I don't have the first and third albums. For bluesy bombast, I'll take "Hello Operator", but my absolute favorite of theirs is the gorgeous McCartney-fronts-The Faces piece of heaven that is "I Want To Be The Boy To Warm Your Mother's Heart". "I'm inclined to go finish high school/Just to let her notice that I'm around". Great line.

Favorite Album - Elephant

Favorite Song - "I Want To Be The Boy To Warm Your Mother's Heart"

Somebody put 'Astro' in their BCB Cup list, and it quickly became a big favourite. Great song, good band.

They're just getting started, so I hope they can some day come close to it again, but for my money, nothing they've done has come close to comparing with Elephant. It's just so far and away the most musical, the best produced, the best songs, the best singing. It all really came together. In 50 years, especially if they don't approach it again, they'll still be talking about this one. In fact on other records, I find Jack's voice quite annoying, the songs unoriginal, the primitivism exaggerated. The new one's decent, but it's still a step backwards.

Album - Elephant, by several fathoms.
Song - The Hardest Button to Button

I only own the latest album so I'm not best placed to comment on those. Fell In Love With A Girl was my favourite song but now it's been knocked off the pedestal now by The Denial Twist. Very cool and sexy track. I get lost in the music and never manage to follow the lyric but the opening four lines are just great and the delivery impeccable. Cool and cocky.

If you think that a kiss is all in the lips
C'mon, you got it all wrong, man
And if you think that our dance was all in the hips
Oh well, then do the twist
I can just about handle you driving like a pissed up crackhead and treating women like beanbags but I'm gonna say this once and once only Gene, stay out of Camberwick Green!

Your probably right, they were my first thoughts. But through this clever mechanism of getting two votes I will go for;

Album: White Blood Cells

Song - Your Pretty good Looking

'Blue Orchid' comes scarily close though, what a monster song.

I wasn't aware that Elephant was such a critical favourite. I kind of felt that the album sunk into the background after the Seven Nation Army single had run its course. Anyway.....

Album: White Blood Cells

Track: Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground
Don't fight the hypothetical

White Blood Cells for me too. It's the first one I heard and I sw them around then too. Brilliant stuff really. I love the fact that Jack decided to deliberatley not make another blues LP, just to make it difficult for himself.

Fave song: Well, there are loads, but I really like "We're Going To Be Friends"

Elephant is still my favourite, but I havent listened to it (or any of them) in a while now. Not sure why, maybe because Raconteurs was so luke-warm.

Anyway:Elephants the best. Jack brings it up a notch, and it worked.

Song: Hypnotize...it kicks arse like no other Stripes song.

DeStijl

You're Pretty Good Looking (For a Girl)

I like they way they have widened their musical panorama, but there is something so perfect about that second album.

That was me.

Album - The White Stripes
Song - Astro

I'm with Maxwell and the others who say Elephant is their worst album, by some distance in my opinion. I was ready for giving up on them after Elephant and was delighted they tried something a bit different for .....Satan.
