Exactly. I felt the very same.
I'm listening to Get Behind Me Satan right now. It really has grown on me. I love the 'non-guitar' stuff. Jack White's songwriting ability is still in evidence, but the broadening of the palate was much needed.

He's broadened the palate, he couldn't take it very far though. Some of the songs on ...Satan are too half-arsed in my opinion. Whereas Elephant is a more of a convincing leap.

I think it probably depends on where you came in to the Stripes. I was a bit late catching onto them, so Elepehant was probably my first or second album. The overdubs and things didn't bother me so much because I wasn't familiar with the raw garage rock band of De Stijl. I think the songwritings excellent on that album though.

I'll be damned if I can figure it out.

They're presumably on there because most people on BCB like them.

Although I'd be grateful if anyone could explain to me why.

I was hooked on The White Stripes from the first time I heard Elephant. I played that CD to death.

Black Math
The Hardest Button to Button
Girl You Have No Faith in Medicine

those are my most favourite tracks on that album, but some lines in *There's no home for you here* always make me smile,

Im only waiting for the proper time to tell you
that its impossible to get along with you
Its hard to look you in the face when we are talking
So it halps to have a mirror in the room

I have all the other albums, and adore them all. Icky Thump is the only one I havent given much attention to, which it probably deserves.
When I was a child we moved around alot. My father thought he was in the army.
