Not at all, though Reed sounds a bit like Yule on Pale Blue Eyes.

And I originally thought it was Nico singing Sunday Morning until I listened a bit closer.

Well, the original '80s CD never said who was singing what so I didn't think about it. I assumed it was Reed.

I probably didn't know until the Peel Slowly and See box set came out--and that was what, In the last ten years or so?

Yule's vocals are fine. Nothing wrong with 'em.

Off the top of my head, here's the songs Yule sings on...

Candy Says
I'm Set Free
Who Loves the Sun
New Age
Oh Sweet Nuthin'
co-sings with Lou on Jesus and Cool it Down

And for Matt's benefit, Nico sings these three...

I'll Be Your Mirror
Femme Fatale
All Tomorrows' Parties

You mean for John's benefit. I can recognize that Germanic out of tune drone underwater.

I'm fairly certain that Cool it Down is Lou double-tracked.

You see how we can't even tell the difference between Lou and Doug?

Proof positive that it doesn't matter.

I believe it is, yes.

But I think it's Lou on I'm Set Free.

I'm pretty sure this is correct. I don't hear Yule there.

I'm pretty sure it's Doug on Who Loves the Sun, I just assumed all the times it sounded like Lou couldn't be arsed it was actually just Doug singing.
Although then again Lou probably didn't rope Doug in for 90% of his solo records.

ANYWAY...

Yule's performance on 'New Age' vindicates him totally. Lou was right to leave the vocal to the little boy. It's disarmingly sweet.

And Lou's vocals on 'Loaded' prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that the man could actually sing. So as well as being an absolute cunt of the highest order, he's been short-changing his fans for decades with this half-arsed talky vocal that ruins all the great songs he wrote in his prime.

Actually, Matt, I saw The Velvet Stranglehold last year at the Free For All Tomorrow's Parties. Their performance of "Journey to the Satellite of Love" was incendiary. Everyone who saw them went out and started a paper route.

Album: Cocked and Loaded
Song: "Wang Dang Sweet Jane"

I'm partial to "Heroin Scratch Fever" myself.

The Slider wrote:My view of him too - like I say, I hate Reed for making Yule the lead singer, not Yule.
If Lou had come up to me and asked me to play bass and sing with the VU I would have fucking leapt at the chance. Even though I am even shitter than Doug Yule at singing and playing the bass.

I don't blame Doug, I just think he is fucking rubbish.
But I do hate the mimsy way he launches off that third album with that fucking shit performance.
You don't start an album (and especially a VU album with candy Says - you start it with Beginning to See the Light or What Goes On.
Or better still you don't fire John Cale and you begin it with Hey Mr Rain.

It's very difficult to argue with this, actually.

It has to be Lou on "I'm set free" (one of their greatest btw).

Lou sings the middle part of I'm Set Free but I'm pretty sure it's Yule that starts the song off.
