Oh halleluia, the thread I've waited all my life for.

Quite simply, one of the greatest bands ever to exist. Very much like the Beatles...three talented songwriters, huge sales and no 1 hits in the US.........

Great great band. Every single one of their albums is an essential purchase. In order of brilliance, starting with the most brilliant:

Songs From Northern Britain
Man-Made
Grand Prix
Catholic Education
Howdy
Bandwagonesque
13
The King

The King is shit, but it was only a studio time filler, contract filler anyway.

The rest, with 13 being the only slight exception, are all easily 10/10 albums. My fav songs are:

Did I Say
Speed of Light
Cells
Empty Space
Don't Look Back
Winter
Take the Long Way Round
Ain't that Enough
Mellow Doubt
Everything Flows
TIme Stops
Too Involved
Alcoholiday

God what a band, what a great band. The Scottish Beatles if you will. I think that is the most appropriate name for them. 8-)

Bit harsh on George, that.

Having read other posts:

Yes they are not original.

Yes they are rather narrow in their output.

But who fucking cares? You know what you're getting. THe songwriting is always nothing short of genius.

Another superb band I'd like to bring up, also Glaswegian, the Cosmic Rough Riders. Not the band now, but the band when fronted by Daniel Wylie. Anyone who doesn't own 'Enjoy the Melodic Sunshine' and 'Deliverance', buy them now, I will refund you if you don't enjoy them.

THen get some of Daniel Wylie's solo stuff - 'Ramshackle Beauty' is the only propoer solo album out at the mo, a new one soon.

Don't buy any of the Cosmics' new stuff without Wylie, its shit.

That's my advice for the day. 8-)

Very obvious choices but thats because they're obviously the best.

I keep meaning to pick something up by them. They completely passed me by for years until I went to see them play with a friend last summer... fall maybe. Anyway the show was quite wonderful and ever since I have been meaning to make a purchase.

There can be only one, Grand Prix and don't let anyone else tell you otherwise.

I'd like to disagree with respect. If you're looking for a power pop album full of powerful, energetic summery tunes, get Grand Prix.

If you're looking for something a little more laidback, a bit more of a grower, a really elegant classy little album, which unveils its genius coyly to you over a two week or so period, then get Songs from Northern Britain

Grand Prix...you're getting laid first date and its great.

SFNB.....you have to have a few dates but its so amazing for taking it that bit slower.

Or better still, get both.

Does that make Everything Flows a prick tease, as A Catholic Education just doesn't put out?

A Catholic Education is surely a tongue in cheek title, it's actually very rough and ready.

In fact, TFC were first known as 'The Boy Hairdressers' and had one single before changing thier name (they wanted 'Teenage Fannies' but it wasn't allowed).

The name of the single?

Golden Shower

SFNB is I would agree an album of maturity but it is not their epitome which of course is Grand Prix.

If you want a swing yer pants in the air rock out then its Grand Prix, if you want mellow reflection then its SFNB.

No man I know except Sting goes for a prolonged session.....

Infidels. Actually, that's high praise.

Rubes.

The only plausible argument against Songs from Northern Britain is Bandwagonesque. And that's only plausibly defensible.

Oddly enough, Griff tends to be right when it comes to the Fanclub.

As do I.
We have that in common.

It has been proven scientifically that when we agree, there is no plausible alternative.

i'm playing howdy! right now - that's great, too. certainly better than its rep (and thirteen).

:(

No way, its sustained from start to finish.

Its the energy that carries it through.

However, if you want a stone cold classic check out Don't hide who you are from Man Made.

Now there is an album of maturity.

Sags in the middle? 'Neil Jung', 'Tears' and 'Discolite'? What a very strange observation.

Wrong again on both counts.
