Exactly what's wrong with the site.
I've finally got down to exactly what's wrong with the site.
After looking through the logs earlier today I noticed that we were getting periodic errors indicating that the server software had reached a set memory limit (32MB) for a particular task. Further digging around indicates that these messages are occurring whenever an automatic purge of YY is triggered - purges run whenever anyone visits the page after the last purge is due. Purges on other sections run fine, as 32MB is usually more than enough.
It seems that automatic purges of YY have been generating these errors for some time. I also get the same error when trying to run a purge manually. As threads aren't being purged, the main database is gradually getting bigger.
As I can't get our provider to increase these RAM limits (the same setting exits for all sites running off this server), I'm going to have to manually delete threads until the purge starts working again.

Cheers Paul.
As the site is so boring at the moment (apparently) why not delete the entire lot of YY and NDL and we'll start again. We can build a new society.

Right, I think the purge system is now working properly. I'll have to double check the logs to make sure.
I've also started rebuilding the search index. Hopefully it will be complete sometime in the next few days. Once it's working I'll get the topic-marking working again, although that may entail another brief outage.

Paul - Let me join the list of people who thank you for all the work you do on this thing so we can play when we should be working.
Much appreciated.

Oh boy is it getting rough, when my old world charm isn't quite enough.
Re: Exactly what's wrong with the site.
I notice that my post count has been reduced. Is this as a result of the purge of old threads?

Thanks for this Paul.
If it's the size of Yakety Yak that's causing us the issues. is it worth us reducing the purge interval? Surely we don't need to keep threads for as long as two years!

The search system will be reactivated shortly, once the index is rebuilt.

Today's auto-purge of YY has timed-out, taking the site down for about 15 minutes. I'll turn it off until I can get it sorted.

Re: Exactly what's wrong with the site.
As others have commented do we really need 205 pages of YY threads? I would have thought we could halve this. But then I don't use it as much as others.

Is there anything up with the "notification of private message" system? I don't really check them unless I see a notification, and I looked today and had a backlog of private messages which I would like to have answered if I had known they were there!
EDIT: Never mind...I think it's working.

Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

I've disabled the search temporarily until I can find a way to stop the option to view all a user's posts hammering the server.

Man oh man. The usability of BCB is a continuing issue. There are some days where for more than an hour I get the mysql too many users error message. Most of the time it's just painfully slow. Been so since well before Christmas.

I'll log another call with the provider; their attempts at fixing things last week haven't really helped.

Re: Exactly what's wrong with the site.
It's still abysmal, almost old MOJO slow sometimes. Do we need to look at another provider? This is painful.
Re: Exactly what's wrong with the site.
Any news Paul? Things seem to be getting worse, the site's been breaking down every 20 minutes or so today.
Good luck with it anyway.
