"Manchester United will miss out on £50m if they fail to beat Ajax in the Europa League final on 24 May.
The game in Stockholm is their only remaining chance of reaching next season's Champions League.
Failure to qualify for Europe's flagship club competition for a second successive season would trigger a £21m penalty clause in their 10-year, £750m sponsorship deal with Adidas.
United also expect to earn up to £30m more by being in the Champions League.
The Old Trafford club's financial officer Cliff Baty said: "For us the bigger prize is Adidas and Champions League."

Thanks. Was beginning to wonder why 'The Special One' had started moaning that their game against Palace should have been moved 24 hours earlier.

Given Mourinho's record of 11 wins in 13 cup finals, you'd have to favour United to win.

Considering that their tea room staff probably cost more than the whole Ajax squad, yes you'd have to favour Man Utd overcoming their injury list to slay the Dutch Dragon.

When any of youse talk to any Utd supporting friends, do they sound confident about Mourinho? More than half of mine, are begrudgingly, supporting him with out being fully convinced.

To show such lack of ambition in a European final against the youngest side to ever appear in a European final was pathetic.

But entirely predictable.

I used to have time for Mourinho but this season he has just gone too far.

It's like watching Inter Milan from the late 60's - it really is. Dull, unambitious, frightened football.

He may win them trophies but I'm fucked if there's a single Man U fan that is really enjoying it.

What is it about this guy? No utd manager wants to get rid of him. He has been one of utd's quietest best players since he joined. Not greatest or stand out, but consistently playing well enough to be kept around.

Wouldn't surprise me. Seems like lots of top football stars have been badly "advised" in Spain.

Happy to see Utd pay 40 million for Matic. I don't think he's any better than Schneiderlein who was deemed not good enough. I've thought he was the weak link in the Chelsea side for some time and his ponderous cup final performance confirmed it. He'll flop there.

Has he gone?

I wholeheartedly concur - he was (at best) functional throughout all of last season (and a good part of the prior season too) so £40 million is good business for Chelsea.

Right. Did Mourinho sign him at Chelsea or release him or sign him AND release him?!

He was very good in his first season and Mourinho clearly still rates him
