It's only a matter of time before the "Sky Six" negotiate their own TV deals. Unlike in the NFL where the TV rights are shared evenly (and there is revenue sharing for most
things) the EPL's bigger hitters were scared shitless by Leicester a couple of seasons back and they sure as shit ain't going to let that happen again. Starving the other teams of TV revenue is the first step.
Remember the days when Everton were part of the 'Big Five' who were adamantly in favour of more money for themselves and so helped bring about the foundation of the Premier League? More money for the clubs in the top division was the driving force behind its creation. Interestingly, Everton along with West Ham & Leicester were the clubs along with the 'Venal Six' who this October voted in favour of a higher proportion of overseas broadcast revenue being given to teams higher up the table.
Football at elite level stopped being 'The People's game' a long time ago. There was an interesting programme recently about women's football in England which by 1921 was getting large numbers of spectators - often higher than men's football - and was then shafted by the FA who refused to allow women's games to be played on the pitches of clubs affiliated to the FA.
There is so much bollocks around football teams nowadays. One bugbear of mine is the kits. There is no need to change them annually, let alone have three strips. One of the many reasons I used to look down on Man Utd was their commercialisation & production of crap merchandise, sadly that boat sailed long ago. When I was a standing member of the Kop, the club shop was a poky little affair about a third the size of my classroom that was open for half a day on Fridays as well as on match days. Now there is Liverpool One, a permanent store in the city centre with other stores in Chester, Birkenhead & Belfast.
The change at Bournemouth has been equally extraordinary.
If Marx was writing now would he replace football for religion in his opium of the masses passage? Perhaps he'd have to include celebrity culture too, both designed to sell a worthless dream to the oppressed.
