Champion's League 18/19

Postby KeithPratt » 18 Sep 2018, 12:08

Arguably the most open tournament for years with plenty of mouth-watering ties in the group stage alone.

Winners? Maybe Atletico Madrid - fearsome squad with quality everywhere.

I strongly suspect Man City may win it this season:

Man City 9/2
Barcelona 6/1
Real Madrid 7/1
Juventus 7/1
Bayern Munich 7/1
PSG 8/1
Liverpool 12/1
Atletico Madrid 12/1
Man Utd 25/1
Tottenham 25/1

Big price for Liverpool too.

What a fantastic game at Anfield last night - again Liverpool nearly let their opponents back into a game that should have been dead and buried long ago. But, credit, they pulled out the injury time winner and that's all that counts.

I'm not so sure Salah was overjoyed at being subbed again though.

He's clearly not in form.

James Milner was an absolute beast last night, tearing around the pitch like someone 10 years younger.

To think him and Rooney are the same age.

We were saying exactly the same thing Toby - for the last 18 months (at least) there hasn't been a more consistent English midfielder. I know he made himself unavailable but I refuse to believe he couldn't be talked into returning - he's so versatile, is very rarely injured and gives 100% every game, no matter where he's playing or the opponents or the stadium.

His versatility hindered his international career. He hot stuck in every position and wound up as a defensive midfield substitute.

Central midfield is an issue for City. Fernandinho looks off the pace and Gundogan a bit too lightweight. You can see why they wanted Jorginho because they were often overrun last night. It's an issue I'm sure they'll resolve but it's a weakness at the moment.

I quite like Tottenham but let’s face it, when the opposition have Lionel Messi and you have Moussa Sissoko, you’re wasting your time.

I bet Ramos is really chuffed about taking that deliberate booking to serve his ban ahead of the Quarter Finals.

:D

Great result for Spurs too.

I looked at which games were on last night and thought "shall I watch one of them? Nah, they're both foregone conclusions".

As for Ajax, it looks like they've got another handy generation coming through there, although one doubts they'll be there long: De Jong is already confirmed to join Barcelona in summer, and De Ligt will most likely be on his way to a BIG TEAM as well. Then there's Neres, van Beek, Ziyech, Dolberg too.

Although supposedly Dusan Tadic was one of the best players on the pitch - I always thought he looked a talented player who didn't really fit at Southampton.

Shocking use of VAR, yet again. I guess next season the premier league will be decided on twatting the ball as hard as possible, in the hope it hits someone's arm.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

I watched the Porto-Roma game, thinking - despite my error regarding Real-Ajax - that the other was a foregone conclusion.

To be fair, that was a really tense and exciting game, Porto throwing everything they had at Roma who stood firm and actually looked the more likely to score a decisive goal once Porto's legs went in extra time, only for another VAR penalty - correctly awarded, this time - to give Porto the tie. There was still time for Dzeko to miss a glorious chance that he would no doubt have buried had they been in the 18th minute rather than the 118th.

I'd love to see a semi-final line-up of Ajax, Porto, Spurs and Lyon but it's not going to happen. I expect next week's games will go a bit more predictably... though after this week who knows? I was really disinterested in the group stages this year but now the tournament feels like it's really come to life.

Well if it's good enough for the World Cup Final...

....is the precise definition of the Champions League, every season.

With a few very rare exceptions... the Group Stage is almost always a total farce, merely rubberstamping the 'elite' teams progress to the last 16.
