Best baseball starting pitching staff ever

Postby sloopjohnc » 16 Jul 2018, 21:23

In my lifetime:

Hunter/Blue/Holtzman/Moon - three won 20+ games

Palmer/Cuellar/Dobson/McNally - four won 20 games

Maddux/Smoltz/Glavine/Avery - three hall of famers

Hudson/Zito/Mulder

Sutton/Reuss/Welch

Gooden/Cone/Darling/Fernandez

Less now than they used to, what with all the 'specialty' pitching.

Of the ones listed, I'd say Maddux/Smoltz/Glavine/Avery (though Avery only came anywhere near keeping up with the other three in '93).

I'd take Koufax/Drysdale/Osteen/Podres over Sutton/Reuss/Welch/whoever. Or Kershaw/Grienke/Haren/Ryu/Beckett.

And it’s dependent on a productive offense. Then again, a lousy team is unlikely to have an elite pitching staff.

As far as my living memory goes, it’s hard to beat that 90s Braves lineup.

Giants has a pretty good staff in those days too - Marichal/Perry/Mike McCormick/Ray Sadecki, Jim Barr, Ron Bryant. In '67, McCormick won the NL Cy Young.

Also '69 Mets - Seaver/Koosman/Gary Gentry/Nolan Ryan (though Ryan only started 10 games).

You can tell that is still a bone of contention between starters and managers when starting pitchers are rolling and they've reached a pitch count limit. Some guys definitely don't want to come out. And I don't blame 'em.
