Alan Gilzean RIP

A legend for Dundee and Spurs.

By all accounts a gent off the pitch too.

I'm sure Rayge has memories

Footballers often used to look absolutely ancient back then. Ralph Coates was another.
Difficult to believe Gilzean was probably only about 30 when this photo was taken

He was a Spurs legend for sure. RIP.

of course - most recently, at the Stoke game at Wembley last December, where he was interviewed pitchside as part of the half-time, ahem, entertainment - he was an unlikely-looking pro footballer, bald and spindly, always looked like he'd be more at home with a pint and a cig in his hands, but he had some sublime skills – tricky feints and dummies, a surprising spring and an absolute mastery of the glancing header.
He was essentially bought as a replacement for my hero, John White, who had been killed earlier that year, and he changed his style to fit in, and was part of two great partnerships, fist with Jimmy Greaves, and then Martin Chivers.
Nearly 80 years old, never would have thought it from seeing him last year.
RIP

Shame. A fine player I remember well - as you say, superb at near post flick headers. RIP.

Incredibly graceful player who made everything look so easy. Imagine the sort of havoc he could cause today

Bizarre to think he only represented Scotland 22 times. Guess caps were a lot harder to come by in the 60s and 70s, - in an international career stretching across 16 years even Dennis Law only got 55.

The book mentioned in the Guardian obit is well worth reading, btw.
