The Economics of Sports

The economics of sports interests me even if I can't always follow it. In the US, college basketball and football programs are feeders for the pro sports. Those athletes go to school on a variety of scholarships and there's been lots of controversy about whether those athletes should be compensated for their play and use of their likenesses by the schools, video games, etc.

Today, an article came out about the value of top echelon college football players and their value to their schools.

An economist who writes really good books on sports economics is Andrew Zimbalist. The book below is a fascinating read



Right now, JD Martinez, a free agent who plays for the Arizona Diamondbacks is asking for $200 million over 7 years and they are figuring that Bryce Harper, who plays for the Washington Nationals will get around $500 million in the next year or so when he becomes a free agent.
