I mentioned, in passing, part of this story to N/E. I'm sure some of you will have read this already, but if you haven't, it's an amazing tale. I really hope they make a film out of it.

Sloop, you might also like the stories of Ali Dia and Masal Bugduv.
Former Liverpool midfielder Graeme Souness was managing Premier League Southampton in 1995 when he got a surprising phone call from the then World Player of the Year, the Milan forward George Weah. Weah told him that his cousin Ali Dia, who had been playing for Paris Saint-Germain in the French Ligue 1, and who was a Senegalese international, was looking for a new club. Sounness knew an opportunity when he heard one and got Dia straight down to the club and signed him up.
Dia made his debut for Southampton as a substitute against Leeds a few days later. 43 minutes later, he himself was substituted.
Because he was absolutely hopeless. His contract was cancelled after just two weeks. It turned out that Dia himself had called Sounness pretending to be Weah, and had wangled himself a pro deal. His career before that point consisted of a handful of games at French amateur level and some failed trials with English lower-league clubs. He never played professional football again.
As for Masal Bugduv...
In 2009 The Times published a list of the top 50 young talents in world football. At number 30 was 16-year-old Moldovan Masal Bugduv, already a full international and a transfer target for Arsenal. Major football website goal.com and well-known magazine When Saturday Comes had also mentioned Bugduv in features on Eastern European and Moldovan football. Shortly after the publication of the article, Liverpool were reported to have developed an interest in signing the player who had assisted the equalising goal on his international debut. Top French football magazine L'Equipe had apparently interviewed him.
The only catch was that the guy didn't exist.
He'd been conjured up online by some pranksters who had posted a lot of reports purportedly from Associated Press on various football forums and websites, and got creative on Wikipedia, so many that major football publications and newspapers had also been taken in. I'm not sure anyone's ever figured out who was behind the hoax.
