Surprised that Croatia persist with Strinic on the left when tvey’ve got a brilliant guy, Pjaca, who’s been cooling his jets the whole tournament.

If you offered me a penalty shootout now I’d snatch your arm off. England have been dreadful this second half

It's all about the midfield , England are giving it up.

Can’t say that wasn’t deserved. Croatia have been far the better team

Well done Croatia. Well deserved. England’s worst performance of the tournament. 1 shot on target in 120 minutes says it all

Well played Croatia.

England were better in the first half and had chances to make it safer, but Croatia were more resilient, skilful and crucially experienced. England surrendered the advantage in the second half and - as in the Colombia game - didn’t look comfortable seeing out a 1-0 win.

I’m sad to go out, of course. For an hour there it felt like they would do it. But I never believed we would beat France in the final.

Anyone who thought we would walk the game tonight is a fucking idiot and so is anyone who has a go at this team after a wonderful run.

Trippier was one of the players of the tournament.

Better team won, without a doubt, but England far surpassed expectations, played some nice football during the cup and battled hard.
They did well and should be proud.

Incidentally congratulations to Dejan Lovren for breaking the world record for the number of fouls committed without getting booked. [/sourgrapes]

England did well to get that far. Looked decent in the first half, but really didn't have the quality needed to get to a final. I'm not convinced we're really contenders again, as the commentator declared, we are obviously really limited, but it's been a fun trip, and it made a welcome change to have a horse to back.

I will say it again ,midfield was lost .In the first half they owned it. 4 years ago I thought Lampsrd and little Stevie Gerrard should make way and blood the youth, Southgate was astute in his picking of the squad . I am Scots but I can recognise that England did well. They didn't create enough shots though and (yawn, gave up the middle of the park) just a little bit more foot on the ball time and it could have been different. France 3 maybe 4 -0 in the final.

Problem with the midfield being lost is that we bolstered it by not playing anyone up front. That's an indication of our limitations.

Well they demonstrably were contenders, having led with 20 minutes to go. First half was also the best I saw them play all tournament - having criticised their passing in the QF, it was like night and day - they were concentrated, inventive and effective. Was great to see. They did lose their way, and I thought some of the substitutions were curious (their bench is quite light, whereas Croatia’s changes brought life/spark to their play).

The substitutes were obvious decisions to be honest. I cannot criticise them. They just needed to be a little more resolute.

Perhaps obvious (although I didn’t see the point of Sterling’s comparatively early exit) but still also shows that their bench is weak.

Substitutions were poor, I thought. I've said enough about rashford already, but vardy was when it was obvious we didn't have a hope. Never going to test a defence with a lead. He needs space to run into, beating a packed 18 yard box is not his game.

Not sure we really had anything better to offer though.

Anyway I'm tired, drinking Stella, for god's sake, and need to concentrate on walking upstairs safely. Night all.

I really want to like Raheem Sterling but he offered nothing. Every attack fizzled out through him.

We didn't lose the midfield because we never had one. Southgate employed Wimbledon tactics of the late 80's by just hoofing the ball up field and hoping Kane (who was awful) and Sterling would latch onto it. Realistically, if we'd have finished top of the group, we'd have been out long before tonight. However, one thing we did manage to achieve though was, the further we progressed, the lower world ranked team we played, some going considering we were ranked 12th :!:

I've been having this on-going argument with DF about Sterling, but I thought he had a great first half. He was stretching them and causing all sorts of problems. There was a point when it was obvious that England were getting too deep and needed a greater threat on the counter. I would have liked Sterling and Rashford together which was doable when it was 1-1. Either Alli or Lingard were more than dispensable. We'd lost control of the midfield and so should have just tried to really threaten with pace on the counter.
Southgate was too conservative when it mattered, but still comes out of it with huge credit. He gave us a hell of a ride.
