In the 11 years since he moved to Europe, playing for Ajax, Liverpool and Barcelona Luis Suarez has missed just 6 games through injury.

Plenty of rests through suspensions, mind :-), but that is a remarkable stat.

The Celtic team that were the first British team to win the European Cup, were all born within 10 miles of Celtic Park. Apart from one who was born 30 miles away.

Cal Ripken - 2,632 consecutive games over more than 16 years with 162 games per season. Baseball.

A.C. Green - 1,192 consecutive games played. That's 14.5 seasons with 82 games in a season. Basketball.

We were in the US when he actually broke that record - I'm not a massive baseball fan but, fucking hell, that was emotional. A 22 minute standing ovation as I recall - really astonishing stuff.

What's even more amazing is that he actually broke Lou Gerhig's record of 2130 on Sept 6th 1995 - but continued to turn up every night for another three years until taking himself out of the next match on Sept 19th 1998....

What position did he play? Hitter or thrower?

Shortstop, which is the most demanding field position other than catcher and non-pitcher.

Apparently, heck of a hoops player too.

He homered that game too. The next night, last game of the season, he pulled himself out and the opposing team, the New York Yankees, gave him a standing ovation along with the fans. The Orioles, whom he played for, was his hometown team growing up and his dad was a coach.
