Incredible game tonight. Both teams had some truly clutch moments and this made for an overall intense affair. We may have an interesting series upon us.

That was poor managing that lost that game. We should have won.

Seeing as how we should’ve won last night, I guess it all evens out.

Uncommonly churlish for you, Dave. I gotta say.

See also: you gotta dance with who brought ya.

I don't blame Kenley - closers will falter every now and then. What I don't get is the quick hooks for Hill and then Morrow. I understand once you've gotten to Verlander you want to lock it down, but a bullpen - even one as good as the Dodgers' - is finite. You have to give them SOME leeway. It was like Roberts was anticipating trouble and managing fearfully.

There's a reason why these teams both won 100 games, though. A lesser team would have rolled over, and both of these teams fought back multiple times. It's still gonna be a great series.

Here's a (partial!) list of all the ridiculous stuff that happened in that game:

Encapsulated the 2017 season - most homers, most strikeouts. Dodgers had five hits, four homers and a single in the 10th.

Yesterday morning, ESPN's baseball analyst, Eduardo Perez, exactly called the innings Hill and Morrow would pitch. I don't get it because it depletes the pen if it goes extra innings. I was wondering if they'd throw a back up third baseman or shortstop up there to pitch if it went more innings.

I thought about that and figured that he took a calculated gamble based on how things had gone throughout the season and the maxim that good pitching beats good hitting. If they’ve lived by the bullpen all year, they have to risk dying by it now. This is the same reason Hinch has left Springer leading off even though he’s been mostly lousy at the plate for most of the playoffs. I thought it was a quick hook for Hill as well, but I also think he was lucky to get out without more runs, and that Houston was about to get to him.

I listen to lots of radio sports talk and go to lots of sports websites. I hate armchair managers and coaches on those places vs. guys who have played and coached games their whole lives.

I bet if you asked Dave Roberts what he'd do differently if he was up by two runs with the best closer in baseball finishing up at home, he'd say nothing.

Oh, he should've been prepared for them tying it up and going extra innings.

I call bullshit.

You can always go back and look whether a coach should've played the percentages based on what happened after, but that's what makes sports great and unpredictable.

Coach woulda, coulda, shoulda

Edit: On local sportstalk radio today, Giants broadcaster, Mike Krukow, called the Astros Cpt. Fullsack and the Raging testosterites.

Those two sentences can’t both be true!

Y’all have probably seen this, but two divergent views about the LA bullpen management from last night. I read these this morning but I recall a comparison to Hinch and Verlander. But that’s obviously inapposite as Verlander is a different kind of pitcher and Hinch has next to no faith in his bullpen (and I can’t blame him).

I was talking to my boss about the game, as he hadn't seen it, but when I explained, he took the view that Roberts handled it okay. I do too.

You also have to remember that the Astros are familiar with Hill when he pitched against them as an A. It's that third time around the order than kills starters and the Dodgers bullpen is the best in baseball. Why not be pro-active?

Because that gives you 15 outs to get. That's asking a lot of a bullpen that's pretty thin at the back end, as we saw.

I don't question taking Hill out NEAR as much as I question using up the quality arms in the bullpen (save Kenley) for so few outs. Morrow should have continued, for sure, and probably Cingrani and Maeda as well.

I'll give you that. Fivethirtyeight straddles the fence - it makes that point but lets you know why Roberts did what he did.

Geez, rhe Astros have left a left a lot of runs out there on the bases today. Only 2 runs in it going into the 9th.
