Baseball 2017

Postby toomanyhatz » 03 Feb 2017, 23:30

So catchers and pitchers report in less than two weeks! I know! :o

As much as I'd love to say we're finally going to bring another world championship to LA, I'm in the odd position of having to admit that the Cubs have to be considered the team to beat. I doubt anybody here will dispute that, but I'd love to hear their reasoning if they do.

Anyway, have at it - expectations, desires, predictions, trash talk?

It's an exciting time of the year. I cannot wait for the season to begin. The Cubs are definitely the team to beat, but I'm still hoping the Detroit Tigers perform well this season. Even if they make the playoff, they'll get swept in the first round. It sounds cynical but it's the true.

I thought the Tigers were trying to unload some of their stars like Cabrera.

They need some restructuring and going after stars, rather than building a solid team foundation has been one of their major issues. This is especially the case for their bullpen. I wasn't aware they wanted to trade Cabrera. He's obviously their best player so I'm not sure trading him would be an intelligent move. Possibly from a financial standpoint, because it would free up some space to start building a consistent team. Plus, Cabrera may want to play on a team that can produce a World Series win, due to his age.

Don't you think it's time they changed the Dodgers name to the Chokers?

It would be stupid - I don't play fantasy anymore, but he's a great offensive player. I go see the Tigers against the A's when I can, and he is one of the most impressive guys at the plate I've ever seen, along with Barry Bonds.

No doubt about it. He's one of the greatest hitters of this era. I would even say he's right up there with the best in history. The pitching dynamics of the modern game make what Cabrera has accomplished truly incredible.

As soon as we change the name of the Giants to "MadBum and 24 other guys."

I hope you enjoyed the first half of the 10's, 'cause it's gonna be a while before it happens again.

No, Buster's great. Hasn't shown much in the post-season, though, I'm sure you'll agree.

If the Dodgers stay relatively healthy (A huge if...) I'm picking them...

Anyone else getting excited?

Looks to me an awful lot like the Cubs and Dodgers are the two best teams in the majors. Obviously the Dodgers have to stay healthy (a pretty big ask if recent history is any indication), but I think they've got a pretty good shot at going far this year.

The Detroit Tigers are truly terrible this season. So, there's no reason to get my hopes up to have them crushed greatly by the pain of their consistent ability to fall apart when it matters. In other words, I'm actually looking forward to this season, because the bar is so low for their success.

Like all other Houston fans, I'd feel a lot better with a stronger rotation, but it should be a fun season all the same.

What's it like for an Astros fan now that they've been picked by several writers to win the whole AL?

Early returns - Giants still have a crappy bullpen, Dodgers still can't hit lefties to save their lives.

I think they're both going to make the playoffs, but not without frustration.

Well, they were SI cover boys last season and promptly stunk up April and May, if I recall.
