England's Managers (football)

Postby Rayge » 22 Jul 2016, 13:00

Obviously Big Sam is a divisive choice, but reading what people want from the next England manager got me thinking about the past managers, their records, and what people might think of them. Below is a list I copied from England Football online (http://www.englandfootballonline.com/te ... Chron.html).
The tabulation I was trying to use did not translate, but basically the numbers are games played, W, D, L, For, Against, and Goal Difference.

International Select Committee (1872-1939) 226 138 37 51 674 293 +381
Walter Winterbottom (ISC) (1946-1963) 139 78 33 28 383 196 +187
Alf Ramsey (1963-1974) 113 69 27 17 224 98 +126
Joe Mercer (1974) 7 3 3 1 9 7 +2
Don Revie (1974-1977) 29 14 8 7 49 25 +24
Ron Greenwood (1977-1982) 55 33 12 10 93 40 +53
Bobby Robson (1982-1990) 95 47 30 18 154 60 +94
Graham Taylor (1990-1993) 38 18 13 7 62 32 +30
Terry Venables (1994-1996) 24 11 12 1 35 13 +22
Glenn Hoddle (1996-1999) 28 17 6 5 42 13 +29
Howard Wilkinson (1999, 2000) 2 0 1 1 0 2 -2
Kevin Keegan (1999-2000) 18 7 7 4 26 15 +11
Peter Taylor (2000-2001) 1 0 0 1 0 1 -1
Sven-Göran Eriksson (2001-2006) 67 40 17 10 128 61 +67
Steve McClaren (2006-2007) 18 9 4 5 32 12 +20
Fabio Capello (2008-2011) 42 28 8 6 89 35 +54
Stuart Pearce (2012) 1 0 0 1 2 3 -1
Roy Hodgson (2012-2016) 56 33 15 8 109 44 +65

Just goes to show that stats mean fuck all.

Interesting that the biggest user (and quoter) of stats in the EPL is Sam Allardyce. And, before him, it was Howard Wilkinson & Graham Taylor.

What's the opinion on Bobby Robson?

We rode our luck big time in 86 and 90 before being knocked out by superior opponents.

Absolutely hopeless in 88.

That's certainly my memory of Italia 90 but I can't remember 86 or 88.

In the last 20 years the only ones of any note have been Venables and Hoddle.

At least Taylors reign gave us that documentary.

I think Hoddle offered something more than any other English coach from a tactical perspective. It's a shame he wasn't allowed to continue, strange comments about the disabled aside.

I'd say Venables (who was a successful coach in Barcelona, lest we forget) was every bit Hoddle's equivalent, but your point otherwise is correct. Although, of course, Robson & McLaren were successful coaching abroad too....

It was but his comments were so fucking horrendous he left the FA no option. And, let's be fair, he hasn't been a raging success elsewhere has he (and hasn't had a coaching role for ten years).
