Pretty even after the first day. Can't separate the teams.

Number one in the world, India, apparently.

Credit to India for coming back so strongly. They exposed England’s weaknesses with the bat - remarkable that Buttler was the one who showed the necessary application and timing - and bowled excellently.
A big mistake from Root to insert them, but it’s understandable why he did after their batting struggles earlier. This should be a lesson to England though that they cannot always rely on the bowling; the batsmen need to perform too. But we’ve been saying that for two years...

Exciting end to the series potentially on our hands.

With Bairstow's injury potentially keeping him out of the next test, England have called up... James Vince.

Fucking hell, is Ballance next on the list then?

Not in his current form. hasn't scored a run all season (bit like the rest of the Yorkshire batsmen...)

We were kind of fortunate to win the first Test, the second the Indian selection was all wrong in picking the (completely unnecessary) second spinner - India crushed us in the third Test... maybe they just are the better side. They certainly look so today - 69 for 5 and counting.

India probably are better - because England’s batting has been so unacceptably poor.

England’s second top scorer in the series - and he’s only 7 runs off top spot - is a guy who bats 8 and hasn’t played every game. That is fucking shocking.

Absolutely agree Ed. If the rest had shown half the determination of Curran, we'd be in a much prettier situation.

9 men went to Moeen went to Moeen Ali
He is superb in England and Wales, as good as Swann ever was.
Abroad, what happens?
Great series, two teams close to being really good but with obvious flaws.
One more great year from Cook please to cement him as the English GOAT

I can't recall any of the opening batsmen from either team producing a 50 so far this series?

If that's right, that is truly bizarre.

Nasser Hussain was saying, in the post match jawing, that it just goes to show how challenging the conditions have been for openers on this tour, there is an element of truth in that, there have been no dolly pitches to rack up easy runs.

The top sixes for both teams have been dire - Kohli aside, and Pujara and Bairstow have both played a couple of good innings.
The bowling has been excellent all round and the one factor that has made the difference is the contributions of England’s lower order: Curran, Buttler and Woakes have made the most decisive contributions with the bat and put the senior men to shame.

Cook is done. Give Burns a go in the dead rubber.

And in fact Cook has just announced his retirement from test cricket. Fair play to him.

I like the timing - it's the right decision at the right time.

As Copey said, he's been a fucking Titan. Lord knows where we're going to find a replacement - we've still not tied down the other opening place yet.

I would have liked him to do one more winter and have a last great series just so he could go out in a golden glow, but he has done enough to be mentioned in any conversation about the greatest British batsman now anyway and at least he chose his time.

With his recent record and if “there’s nothing left in the tank” as he says himself then he shouldn’t play at The Oval.

There is too much of this soft sentimental thinking when it comes to retirement issues. We should just play the best team for the circumstances which is this game and the future. Cook has had his day, sad, but time to move on with positivity.

And what would we gain from putting someone in there in a series where, as we know, not one opener so far (that's 16 innings) has managed to make a half century? Setting him up for failure, in my eyes. As the series is won, I think Cook deserves a send off. He's certainly earnt it.

Hmm, I think that is stretching it a bit.
