Well well. Well played Malan and Bairstow. Also Stoneman, who currently seems much more reliable than Cook, though he needs to start pushing on after these half-centuries.

When Malan, was first picked in the Test squad I laughed. I didn't rate him as a test prospect. Well played that man.

You can have the Ashes. Our lot don’t deserve to get anywhere near them. Another complete surrender; even more pathetic after that first day.

Did anyone else see the interview with Root yesterday where he said that they "Haven't been out of any of the Tests so far". I kid you not.

10 wickets
120 runs
Innings & 41 runs.

They don't represent close matches Joe, I'm afraid.

England have played well for one day in each test.

I still don’t think there’s much of a talent gap between the sides. Australia have bowlers more suited to the pitches and conditions, and a proper spinner. Otherwise they have just shown far greater application and nous.

Excellent article that echoes much of what us lot have been bleating on about for the last year or 2 I think.

We are never going to get a spinner of real merit when they don’t play 1st team red ball cricket when the pitches are suitable. And we are unlikely to get real quick bowlers come through the ranks when the 75mph dobbers who can move it about on green pitches and in damp air have conditions in their favour when most of the County season is played.

England were never going to win down here with a phalanx of slower quicks. Anderson has reasonable stats this tour but he needed some support at the other end. And that support was someone bowling aggressively in the mid 140s. Philander, somewhat similar to Anderson, succeeded last year down here because South Africa had Rabada. Maybe Stokes could have been that bowler. Either way our quicks are why Stokes wouldn't have been the magical difference between the two sides. He dodged a bullet!

Oh yeah and we have Smith.

So 5-0 :)

I was having a discussion elsewhere about the merits of Stuart Broad, and the fact that he is on the verge of joining an elite group who have taken 400 wickets and scored 3000 a Test runs. (Thought I’d share it here.)

That group consists of Hadlee, Kapil Dev, Shane Warne and Shaun Pollock.

Personally, I think Broad’s name would look a little out of place there.

Oh he’s had some wonderful spells but the hot streaks are not regular enough and the days where he is cold are too regular.

So I did a bit of research. Out of 205 innings he has bowled in, in 95 he has taken 1 or 0 wickets, that’s 46.3%.

Anderson has had 100 innings with 0 or 1 wicket out of 247, that’s 40.5%.

Botham had 72 out of 168 = 42.9%.

And a couple of other examples....

Harmison was 51 from 115 = 44.3%.

Bob Willis was 76 from 165 = 46.1%.

And Broad took 4 or more wickets in 29 out of 205 innings = 14.1%.

Anderson has done it 50 out of 247 = 20.2%.

On both of the Anderson comparisons the difference is 6%. That is MASSIVE

There's a whole heap of denial going on - Stoneman this time :

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/42401187

But, asked if it felt as if England were playing against a better side Stoneman, who has played six Tests, said: "In all honesty ...."

"fairly balanced bowling attacks", yeah no. 3-0 says we are better than England Stoners. Maybe in 2019 the shoe will be on the other foot.

One thing outside England's papier-mâché performances that a lot of people are unhappy about is the reported level of sledging and abuse that the England players are having to face from both their opponents and the crowd. Australia have made no secret about the way they are trying to get under the English players' skin.

Sledging has been a part of the game for a long time, for better or worse - personally I think that umpires and officials should come down much harder on it - and England are as guilty as anyone else of mouthing off on the field, but this seems to be something new. Moeen Ali reported some racist comments directed towards him, there are rumours that something was said to Bairstow was way over the line and now Mason Crane who might be debuting has commented that he has "never seen the like before" regarding the language. Anderson, known himself to be gobby on the pitch, has called the Australian approach "bullying". I've read a couple of (neutral) articles that suggest the same: personal abuse has no place in the game. I remember New Zealand committing to avoiding any sledging in the World Cup a couple of years ago after the death of Phil Hughes, a very noble approach... unfortunately their neighbours (and Hughes' countrymen) had no qualms about using this to their own advantage. It seems that any criticism of Australia's approach is just shrugged off as "pommie whinging".

I personally think that whatever the result it leaves a very sour taste to the series but do Australian fans just see their players' "mind games" as part of their overall superior performance?
