Jennings has been a dead man walking all series. It's a shame because he does seem to have the ability, but if you can't do it on that stage, they can't keep selecting him ad infinitum (though they have for others in the past). As Penk says, I am sure that he will later hit a vein of form where he comes back successfully, but his time is not now.

That looks like a team for The Ashes to me.

Good list, but still not convinced by two and three; we need Bell 2.0 at three and, if not quite a Chris Tavare, then someone duller than Hameed at two because after Root its a 20-20 team.

I think you have Hameed confused with somebody else. The guy has never hit a boundary in his life. He makes Alastair Cook look like Lance Klusener.

Yeah, I didn't phrase that right. What I meant was he lacked the reassuring certainty that at least came with Tavare's tedious batting, the knowledge that it would take forever, but he would accumulate runs as sure as a glacier will slowly move. From what I have seen of Hameed, you sometimes get hours of nothing and then he's out.

In 6 Test innings Hameed has hit 23 x 4s and 2 x 6s. Strike rate 34.21

In 56 Test innings Tavare scored 175 x 4s and 0 x 6s. Strike rate 30.6

I am astonished to discover that there is anything on Tavare's scorecard that is not a dot ball or a single.

Shall I go David Steele instead? That's the sort of indomitable spirit over ability that we need.

So, Jennings and Dawson out (both correctly), Stoneman and (incredibly) Mason Crane in. A callow, experience-free 20 year old leggie who can barely get in his county side (and hasn't pulled up any trees when he has played) picked ahead of last winter's leading wicket taker for England, Adil Rashid. MIndblowingly stupid. Has horrible echoes of Chris Schofield being thrown in when he couldn't cope. I hope for his sake that Crane's career doesn't go the same way. Hopefully he's just been picked for 'experience, to be around the squad' and they have no intention of actually playing him.

Conclusions to be drawn from the first day of the series:

The West Indies are a complete rabble and if England can't comprehensively spank them in all three test matches then they need a serious look at themselves.

I spent yesterday telling myself that it must just be a bad day because there simply couldn't be a test team that poor. Time will tell, but I suspect I was lying to myself.

EDIT: for the record, I am referring above to the West Indies not England!

They did win a test against Pakistan both home and away this last year. Hardly amazing I know but still, they should not be as bad as they showed yesterday.

Wonder if there were any interesting betting patterns around those two games.

Based on what I've seen today, they are every bit as bad as suggested yesterday.

I feel quite sad about it in many ways - my love of cricket really came about via the WI teams from 75 onwards (and Lancashire & Clive Lloyd prior ro that). To see them fallen this far is almost unbelievable.

I like that England posted a mammoth total featuring one double-hundred and another century, and still found time for a collapse where they lost five wickets for 60-odd runs!

Only because they were going for quick runs.

Yes I understood that. I was making a frivolous comment related to England's well-known tendency to collapse. Sorry for not putting a winking emoticon or something there to help you out.

Anyway that was rather embarrassing. And I'm an England fan.

The Windies can't possibly be that bad in the remaining two tests. Can they?

Oh well, we are shite batting under pressure so this match is already lost.

FTLOG please bring in 3 players for the next match who have a chance of getting past double figures against Australia.

Hameed, Hales and Christ, I dunno who else. (Please can no-one even jokingly suggest Ian Bell who hasn't scored a ton in a year and a half, didn't get past 16 in his last 10 T20s for Warwickshire / Birmingham Bollocks or whatever they are called, and averages under 25 in the Championship this season.)

Lyth and Robson looked better than the shower of shite who have played at 2, 3 and 5 this season.

To be honest I'd be tempted to forget about a No 3, just stick Rashid in the team and put the others up the order.

Bring in Buttler. He averages 30+ in tests and did fine against India last year. Give him the gloves and bat him at 7 so that Bairstow can play as a specialist batsman and take more responsibility.

If Hameed is back in form he opens.

And maybe Hales in the middle-order? Or who else has made county runs and isn't another Flash Harry? Northeast?
