Re: Premiership 2017/18
Personally I think he's Kompany/Ferdinand material. Outstanding in the air and a great distributor from the back. The interesting thing is that apart from the 4 games this season that Liverpool have conceded 3 or more goals, their defence has actually been pretty tight. They've only conceded 3 at Anfield for example.

Re: Premiership 2017/18
You know Van Dijk is very good - and he's a commanding centre back who can play a bit too. John Stones - think of that, but probably better defensively but not as good with the ball. I suppose if Stones was worth £40 million little over a year ago, and the huge escalation since the Neymar deal, it may not be such a ridiculous fee.
But that's quite a few if and scenarios, for £75 million.
I'm not sure Coutinho will move in January - he may sign a deal to move at the end of the season, which may placate him enough to see the season out. But he's moving, there's no doubt. The whole tone around his departure has been 'managed down' the past few weeks - I think Oxade-Chamberlain's defensive intervention in their interview a couple of weeks back was telling. I think they probably all know.

That was just about the classiest thing he’s done in a Liverpool shirt so far

I think he's officially behind the times in terms of the way football is going. Too early to call him a dinosaur but he refuses to adapt, and I think other than money no real talented attacking player will want to play for him.

I’m actually happy to see Moyes and Hodgson doing better than expected. There was something unbecoming about the flak they both took after taking the jobs.

We're not out of the woods by any means, but there are good reasons for optimism. Hats off to him for energising Arnautovic, who looks like quality all of a sudden.

He does, but there must be doubts over whether he's got the discipline and determination to sustain it...we shall see.
Both West Ham and Palace are a cut above the likes of West Brom, Stoke, Swansea, Huddersfield etc. and I expect to see them pull away into mid table over the next few months. The weird one are Southampton who have some very good players, but the manager doesn't seem to know how to get them playing with any confidence.

Here’s a suggestion for something these video panels can do with their time: retrospectively cancel goals like Doucore’s today, and issue him a three-match ban instead.

I haven't seen the goal, but that seems a totally impractical suggestion. How can you cancel a goal and potentially alter the result after the match has finished

Re: Premiership 2017/18
He punched the ball into the net in the 90th minute thus gaining his team a point and denying Southampton two. I’d argue that if video technology can show that a goal is scored using evidently foul means then it could be cancelled regardless of how that affects the result. You cheat, you pay.
Of course the plan is that video assistant referees will be able to do this on the spot anyway so it should be an irrelevant argument.

You can dock points for financial irregularities, illegal players used, result in being knocked out of competitions. It really isn't much of a stretch to do this if you blatantly cheat is it.

..well yes, because then you'll end up replaying matches all the time. Unless we're talking about the kind of technical infringement which are pretty rare (having 12 players on the pitch at once or fielding an illegible player, for example) then I don't see how it can be practically done.
