The easiest way to get Youtube vids onto your desktop. Just saves them as MP4 files. Easy! Magic!

A small program that lets you rename batches of files in all sorts of ways:
http://www.publicspace.net/ABetterFinderRename/intro.html
It's free, but only lets you change 10 files at a time, but if you upgrade for 20 euros you get the ability to change as many as you like.

NeoOffice is good. It's free and like OpenOffice but built for a Mac so no X11 platform.

It's a java application, though, so has some quirks not found in standard Mac applications.

It'll do until the real OpenOffice for Mac comes out though.
By the way, am I right in thinking that by chucking an application in the tray I uninstall it?

No, that just removes it from the Dock.
For most applications you just drag the application icon itself to trash. These are usually stored in the Applications folder, but cam be anywhere. There's also the chance that there could be something in the Application Support folders in either your Library folder or the main Library Folder; these too can be junked. There's also a possibility that there's plugin files for other applications or kernel extensions that also need removing, but these are fairly rare - if so running an uninstaller should remove them.

Is this OK? I didn't even think about iWork or any word processing when I bought my Mac Mini recently.
My Mini came with a Leopard disc, but looking at NeoOffice's website, I could be asking for trouble if I upgrade. Tiger seems OK, though.
Any thoughts?

I used it okay on Leopard (and still have it installed as I have documents in .odt form throughout my system. I have, however, paid the £55 for iWork, which is pretty nice, though I haven't got to grips with all of it yet.

So do you think it's worth paying for iWork? It's a little cheaper here ($79)

It depends what you use an Office Suite for. To be honest TextEdit would do for what most people want most of the time. I do write presentations, manage spreadsheets and page layout (which I believe Pages can do), and I as feeling flush so I went for it. I like the idea that it's all integrated.

I think Keynote is way better than Powerpoint - and looks different on screen, which can be important (if you can persuade the tech people to let you plug your Mac into their projector).
Pages is good as word processor, but Numbers is no Excel. It is however good enough for most people who aren't trying to use vast macro encrusted Excel s/sheets. Like me.

All true. Keynote is way better than Powerpoint, but Excel is better than Numbers.
Of course, I was mostly stoned at the time.

Re: Small list of useful Mac stuff.
I've just found this: Clutter.
It works with iTunes. After installing it, you open iTunes and then play stuff. The LP cover appears in a smaller window, meaning you can minimize itunes and still have the pic on the desktop. So far, no big deal. The nice thing about this is that you can then drag that image onto your desktop and leave it their. It means you could - in Leopard - force Clutter and iTunes to open in an otherwise unused Space which, when you go to, is littered - or cluttered with LP covers. Much like the lounge floor after an all night session impressing you mates with you record collection before passing out. It doesn't sound like a big deal but it can keep recently ripped LPs handy. you can, of course, delete the cover on the desktop without deleting the files. Also, the music doesn't have to be in the iTunes music folder.
