XBox 360 and Router

Postby Thesiger » 03 Feb 2012, 14:10

Can't get it to connect to my router any more. It happened after I moved the machine into a different cabinet and connected it to a new HD screen (through HDMI) rather than to an older analogue TV. Son can now only play in standard mode without being able to get online for remote opponents.

We took the Xbox round to a friend's house and apprently it worked fine in picking up their router. What could be the problem? Could the new tv be interfering in some way with the internet signal? Other computers elsewhere in the house are still working fine.

Any ideas/suggestions?

Presumably it's a wireless connection? Can you try hard wiring it - cable from the ethernet port on the Xbox directly cabled to the router? That would at least eliminate the Xbox itself from problems.

Yes, it's wireless. Good idea. I had in mind to try that as one option.

I hard wired it and it works again. Thanks for the tip.

Be interested to know if it is the TV interfering with the wireless.

Well, I don't know. I had our local friendly computer chappie along and he was stumped too. We also took the XBox to one of Mark's friends house and it worked ok there from their wi-fi. We're happy to carry on with a wired connection, however.

There's probably something directly between the line of sight of the router and XBox that's getting in the way. Door handles are particularly prone to causing these kinds of dropout, as they're around the same length as the wavelength of the WiFi signal.
