king feeb's self-promotion spot with amusing animated videos

Postby king feeb » 12 Oct 2010, 10:32

2010 has been a strangely productive year for yours truly. I wrote and recorded three discs this year that I think leave much (though not all) of my previous work in the dust. I'm thinking of taking a short break now, but I really had a "purple patch" this year (and this isn't counting two albums of experimental electronic music I did since January!).

Anyhow, here are the LPs with URLs where you can download them completely free. I also included some animated videos I made of a track from each LP for yer viewing "enjoyment". I hosted these albums on several sites (including LastFM) but I'm going to give the URLs for Bandcamp and Jamendo, because they have the highest quality downloads.

Thanks, Leif.

I'm not actually using any animation program. I'm doing individual cels in Photoshop and then dropping them sequentially into iMovie. Each drawing is shown only .03 of a second, and it takes a lot of drawings to even realize a single minute of a video. I estimated it took about 1500-1700 cels to make "Driving Through Hell In A Little Black Truck" (which took me 9 sessions of 8-10 hours each).

It's certainly more labor-intensive than Flash animation, but I really like the look of the finished product.

Somehow, I barfed up yet another LP this year (even though I promised myself I was going to take a break). This collection prominently features the cheap/cheesy Yamaha keyboard I bought at the local charity store for $70. Such a deal! Also, the sound quality is better on this one, due to much research on EQing. Anyway, here's the info (and a video for all you Philip K. Dick fans):

SOAPBOX (recorded May 2011- September 2011)

10. We Shit You Not 2:25

Soapbox is really great!
highly recommended!

a very fine album!

/ Tony! just out of curiosity, whats your own thoughts about your research on EQing?
what have you done different this time?

Most of the research was focused on bass. I felt that the overall bass presence and sound was a bit weak on my last few efforts (maybe because the guitar and keyboard sound has become stronger? I dunno...). In any case, I felt that the bass was lacking in presence, yet if I merely turned up the gain on the bass channel, I would get a booming bass sound that drowned out everything else. This time out, I tried cutting and pasting the bass track multiple times so that I had two or three identical bass tracks. I then EQed each track differently (one emphasizing the low frequencies, the second emphasizing the higher frequencies and sometimes a third with some type of slight distortion or fuzziness). This allowed me to mix them together, which gave me a lot more flexibility (for instance I could have a booming bass sound that doesn't overwhelm the other instruments in sheer volume, or a smoother bass sound that doesn't get lost in the mix). It seems to have added more clarity and definition to the basslines this time around.

I also did similar things with the guitar tracks, having the same guitar going through two or three different effects on different tracks and then blending them together. I also did a lot of experimenting with guitar sounds (which has nothing to do with EQ). For instance the guitar sounds on "Now Here Man" (yes, that's a guitar, not a keyboard) were produced by plugging in a chain of four different effects, ending with this cheesy "organ" setting on my little multi-effects unit (Korg Pandora). It looked like a Frankenstein experiment, but sounded pretty cool, I thought.

The other EQ thing I worked on was the sound of the cymbals. I use a drum machine, and I always thought the cymbals sounded too sibilant. After a couple of hours of dicking around, I found a good EQ setting which, when mixed with a tiny tad of reverb, sounds more like a real cymbal.

Overall, I'm using fewer channels these days (because I'm planning things out better), which gives me more space for such cut/paste/multiple EQ experiments.

Even though it is probably NSFW, I did an animated clip for "Janitor Of The Universe". It's in horribly bad taste of course, but you can dance to it!
